SAM had his four-year checkup on Friday. He was fine, at a good weight and height as he always has been, but we knew that already. :) Our pediatrician is pretty cool - this visit we noticed that there was a plastic roach in one of the pharmaceutical displays in our room. When Seth pointed it out to the doctor, he told up that there were several ( Read more... )

Reading is abnormal? I suppose they meant for the age group, although ELK has most of her books memorized by now, to the point she tells them word for word to LEK. Then when you least expect it she sounds out all sorts of new words or catches you in the middle of the "spell it out so the children don't know" game. I think most people are underestimating the capacity of children these days, as they can spend more time and have more opportunities than ever to learn. Those pediatrician growth and development charts are all outdated, even if our children are geniuses, of course. :)

:) Well, he was joking, but he did mean for the age. I was thinking yesterday that we'd better watch out with spelling things to keep him in the dark, it might not work as long as we expect...

And yep, I think kids can do a lot more than we give them credit for, sometimes. I do think it's important not to pressure them to do things too early, but with the reading, we only do the Dick and Jane book if Seth wants to. Usually he wants to read longer than I do, so as long as he's having fun, I think we're okay. :) He learns the most (like how to add) just by talking to us during the day.
