It's kind of interesting to think about how far back we've really gone when it comes to sex within the last few years. I mean, I remember that condoms weren't this weird taboo thing, and the idea of women fucking because they want to was actually like relatively common. Like Salt-n-Pepa songs. And Left Eye from TLC with her condom eyepatch. It ( Read more... )

wtf is this shit, fucked up, feeding my misanthropy, sex stuff, media, history

Quoting Camille Paglia? What is this, 1994?

That's what I was thinking.

Ha... and just when I was saying the early 90s had less sexism.

Yeah, but Paglia was trying to push back against the progress.

Oh I know. I was just saying to someone the other day that there was a lot less homophobia and sexism in the early 90s' even in pop culture. Then by the end of the 90s all these pathetic dudebro bands like Limp BIzkit started whining about how women rejected them and were bitches and all the little MRAS starting holding them up as poster boys.

I was wondering if it was just me for a while, because damn, it's gotten a lot more toxic in such a short while.

Yeah. Remember Woodstock 94 where people rolled around in mud and saw some bands and had a good time? Then compare it to Woodstock 99 where people were throwing bottles, set fire to the stage and there were like like 30 reported rapes. That was when I realized things had changed.

The mainstream media has been pushing this retrograde view of sexuality and gender for most of the last decade. As the religious right has gained political ground, their hacks in the media have felt freer and freer to say what they really think about women's rights. Consider Ross DoucheHat's NYT column suggesting seriously that young fertile women be compelled to make babies for infertile couples; and Rod Dreher's Deep Thots that while clerical abuse of boys just isn't on, the FLDS is okay because girlz iz for breedin' and they might as well get to it toot sweet.

Cat Marnell's column, to me, mainly stinks of the trope of Unbalanced Woman Exhibits Her Dysfunction To World For Their Titillation And Disapproval. There are two main flavors: The Unhappy Single "Girl" (also see Lori Gottlieb, or any number of unattached 20-something women in Manhattan who've written this kind of piece), or The SAHM Going Slowly Crazy (Ayelet Waldman etc.). It's an old trope, dating back to at least True Confessions, probably earlier ( ... )

I wonder if it's going to happen the same way the Second did - hippie men like this one pissing off OWS women into radicalizing?

"Pretty faces were making signs, giving speeches, organizing crowds, handing out food, singing, dancing, debating, hugging and marching." Amazing how the language never changes. It's a very thin veneer of "I love women, I love their beautiful bodies and faces, women are my favorite things in the world" over a massif of "Shut up and get on your back, bitch, that's all you're good for," and being attuned to it makes you into a "misandrist" because HDU interfere with the sacred male prerogative of ogling T&A.

Greatest Generation patriarchs, Baby Boomer d00dz, Gen-X neckbeards, millennial douchebros... same shit, different era.

Well put. Because as far as a lot of the male left goes, I am reminded of what the official position of women in the SNCC was

Skepchick had a great post about this with some great comments debating on whether this was satire or not!

Oh, nice. I was too busy at work to join in that day, but I did read most of them. I'm still confused as to whether this is satire or not, but I was honestly never that into magazines so I'm actually not too familiare with her backstory.

Plan-B shouldn't be a primary means of birth control. I mean, I'm pretty sure it SAYS SO ON THE BOX.
Hell, it says so in the name!

I like Plan-B because it fucks you up a lot less than what they used to dish out in the early 2000s... but I suspect oldschool methods might help here: more likely to look into proper contraception if emergency contraception makes you barf? This incredibly scientific observation is based on my two experiences which took place 10 years apart.

Ahh, I only had my experience with it in like 2002, where it was still a joyful thrillride of nausea.

Oh god, you seriously have these woo courses? That's moderately horrifying.

Oh yeah! I worked a full-day at El Burrito after I had mine.

Keep on sipping from the haterade in the back, and know that I wish I was there to mock with you. And write to me about it so I can dig up which of the woos come rom really problematic backgrounds, like the Japanese blood type thing.
