On Not Going to College, a Dilemma

Is it acceptable to just not go to college? There was a time when I cared, but now I'm fed up with the stops and starts, and I realize I don't even think I want it anymore. I've got a good job, and I am following my love in life, which is writing, and I just cannot force myself, at 35, to read books I don't care to read, and to write papers on ( Read more... )

I discussed this with Tim last night -- what do you do when every ounce of your body has no interest in the subject you are learning? "How did you force yourself to read say 50 pages of dry, unrelated-to-your-life drivel, when you were in college?" I asked. His answer? "Most of the time, I didn't do the reading."

Our education system is set up more to make money than anything else in this country, and you end up taking a slew of courses you don't even need, just so you can get to the heart of things and learn what you set out to learn. There are so many more types of learning in this world. While spending years in Europe, years reading and years having lengthy conversations with a number of diverse people, I learned more valuable info than any school could ever hope to bestow upon me, IMHO.
