Hmm, maybe sneaking around this village would be easy.
His eyes roamed around the place. Whistling and trying not to be obvious though keen eyes are observing him, he focused his eyes on the silk clothes displayed at the other side of the area, his feet shuffling fast through the strings of people between the kiosks, until his hand that he sneakily placed on his back grabs the mandarin that was almost dropped at the stall. Smiling as he gains victory, he walks straight, being casual, oblivious that the vendor across the mandarin stall saw him.
“Thief!” And there goes Yunho’s cue.
Run, run, run. Like the strong wind accompanying him whilst the wards are chasing him in the narrow streets of Byeongnando. Their green uniforms swirling in the wind. He takes a left turn and finds it’s a dead end. As the hot-blooded men run off to the same route that the young man treaded, they only find a high wall and a stack of hay grouped at the left corner.
“We lost him.” One of the guards told their supreme.
“He might have climbed on the roofs. Go search for him!”
The policemen grouped into three’s to search for the mandarin snatcher.Happy with his gambit, Yunho laughs as he sneezed his way out of the ticklish hay surrounding him with a mandarin on his left hand. “Time to go home.” A smile on his face, Yunho walked his way.
“Orabeoni!” a young skinny girl laughs as she runs towards her older brother. “Curly ahjumma gave us chicken soup while you were gone. We are going to have dinner today, aren’t we?” Her smile outshines the dirt in her face, an evidence that she played at the construction site near their house.
“Yes. Have you been a good girl while staying at curly ahjumma’s?” Yunho brushes her hair at the side and wipe the small grease in her cheek. “Yes! Jihye has been a good girl while staying at curly ahjumma’s house. I behaved there and helped with the house chores. That’s why curly ahjumma let me play with Jungseok and Ahrin!” Ah, so that’s why you are a mess today. Yunho can’t help but smile at the cuteness of his sister.
“Yunho-ah, are you there now?” The curly ahjumma appeared as she finished folding her children’s clothes hanging before. Yunho approached her leaving his jolly sister holding the mandarin he promised to her if she behaved well today. Yunho paid respect and bowed to her. “Thank you for taking care of my sister.”
“Aigoo, you sweet child!” The older woman pats Yunho’s shoulder as if to say no need to thank me. His smile is contagious. The ahjumma finds herself smiling at him too. She never treated him or Jihye harshly. The siblings are too kind to her for them to receive such treatment. Without saying anything, the ahjumma finds Yunho sweeping the front yard. It’s his task, and a way of repaying her on how she took care of them. She can’t stop the older Jung from cleaning the front porch as well, wiping any dust that there is. She doesn’t treat him like a servant; the way Yunho acts is of his own free will.
“Omma!” the petite girl cried as she woke up from the sudden high temperature in the room. She finds that her mother is missing by her side after abruptly waking up from their afternoon nap. Screams and wails floated around her as she finds her coughing brother approaching towards her.
“Orabeoni!” the little girl cried in her brother’s arms. The siblings struggled to escape the dangerous dance of flames surrounding them.
“Hush Jihye-ah…” he knows his attempt to comfort her younger sister failed. He grabbed a long blanket and a basin of water at the corner of the room, soaked the cloth and wet the both of them. Covering themselves with the wet blanket, they tried to escape the room. But when they opened the door, more fire came at their sight, making the little girl in Yunho’s arms cry harder.
“Jihye-ah! Yunho-ah!” They can hear their mother scream for them. They shouted as in response, and they saw their mother, trying to come near to them. She succeeded in coming near to them, but they lost her whilst she was saving them. As soon as both children got out of the burning house, they realized that their mother was trapped at the doorway, and a burning piece of wood which trapped the exit. Yunho wanted to save her, but the people around him were holding him back.
“Omma! I want to save my mother!” He kept on shouting at them, but all he could do was to struggle in their firm grip. The other villagers helped on extinguishing the fire.
It was all ashes and burnt wood. The moment the fire had been put out, Yunho ran to his mother’s place, but all he could see was a corpse of a loving woman. The most important woman next to his sister. He couldn't cry anymore, his sister had been crying for the past half hour as they watch their mother’s body being put in a pit. They couldn't afford a proper burial because of the lost of all their belongings and the ownership on their property.
“Orabeoni! Let’s go fishing today.” Jihye’s enthusiasm wakes Yunho from his daydream. The child’s toothy smile shined at him, as he finished on cleaning the dishes. Yunho nodded and prepared a basket, wooden tackles and a fish net.
“We caught a lot!” Jihye smiles as she holds a dead milk fish in her hands. “Yes, we did. Now let’s gather our things. We still have to prepare the lunch.” Skipping happily, Jihye helped her brother out on fixing their things with the fish in the basket as they went home.
It’s a sunny afternoon and Yunho thinks of strolling once more in the streets of Gaegyeong. He heard from the traders of Byeongnando that some delightful milk came in from Italy. It would be nice if Jihye gets to taste some of that. His happy thoughts of milk and his sister flew when a group of tall, frightful guys appeared in front of Yunho.
Oh, it’s Jeonghwa and his guys.
Yunho slowly stepped backwards, until he felt the wall hit his back, as he stared at them. The sweat trickling down his forehead wasn't missed by Chulsuk, stating that their offender was now nervous.
“It’s been five days since we didn't see you, Yunho-ah” the ugly smirk on Jeonghwa’s face made Yunho prayed to Cheonjiwang and other gods he knew. “You know guys, we can… talk about this… in a nice way.” Jeonghwa comes face to face with Yunho his head raised as if he was looking down on the other man.
“We haven’t forgotten what you've done last week, Yunho-ah…” the lardy leader kicked Yunho in the leg, making Yunho kneel before him. The other guys took a hold of Yunho as they started showering him with punches and kicks. He was about to give the money bag to them and have their shares, but the guards running after them made Yunho take a different route from them. Thus, Jeonghwa and his guys were caught by the policemen while he was safe with the money bag in his hands. He may have forgotten about the men and the money sharing as he shopped for some clothes for him and Jihye, that’s why Yunho didn't have time to meet them again.
Jaejoong was getting sick of riding his horse while observing the town; everything is in its proper place. Criminals were caught; taxes are paid by those who have to, people are doing their daily routine like an unending cycle. Everything changes when there is an occasion and that is the only time Jaejoong pays extra attention. That’s why when he heard blatant yells of hurt and help, Jaejoong and his guards followed the loud noise and found five men ganging up on a poor, petite guy. Well, that’s what Jaejoong sees.
He calls the attention of the guys, and as soon as they saw the police, they tried to disperse but they still end up on the officers’ hands. Jaejoong approached the injured guy who was catching his breath in coughs.
“Help… please…” and Yunho passed out in the arms of the military officer.
When Yunho woke up, he found himself in an unfamiliar room. The ceiling has carvings of the night sky, his eyes roam around the room observing the large room, with a shelf of books on the right corner, a dress-room on the other side, a pot of white roses and a guy who is sitting at his left side observing him observing him. The unknown guy stares at him, both of them staring at each other, until Yunho can’t take it and turn his head on the other side.
“Are you okay now?” The unfamiliar guy asked whilst Yunho wonders what he's doing here. And who is this unfamiliar guy? He tried to get up but the ache in his head hurts that much. The other guy catches him before Yunho falls hard on the floor.
“I guess you’re not okay.” The unfamiliar guy smiled at him. “I’m Junsu. May I know your name?” the lad smiles at him like a beam of sunshine.
“I’m Yunho. Why am I here?” He looks around to observe the room again, suddenly feeling thirsty. Junsu senses Yunho’s thirst and gave him a glass of water.
“You’re in Jaejoong hyung’s room now. He found you at an alley while on duty.” Junsu tries to check on Yunho’s forehead which is now covered with a piece of cloth.
“He saved you from a mob of ugly men. Well, now you’re safe!” Yunho chuckles at the way Junsu tells him what happened.
This Jaejoong must have told him what happened.
While Junsu continues to talk about what happened, he remembers how he passed out when some guards caught Jeonghwa and his guys punching and kicking him. He thinks about how he could repay this Jaejoong guy. He talks with Junsu and they talked for a while until the door opens, revealing a man in a military officer uniform. Yunho’s current mood suddenly dropped. Yangban.
“Oh, Jaejoong hyung. Yunho-sshi is now awake.” Observing the other man, Jaejoong noted about Yunho’s face, a unique one; the prominent jaw, disheveled hair, small face, bow-shaped lips, and his body. Goodness, the guy looks malnourished. The looks he gives to Yunho are the ones of an admirer, but the way Yunho looks at him is like he is a disgusting person. Yunho snobs at him, which is a shock for a Jaejoong because he didn’t do anything to him, looking back at Junsu.
“Junsu-sshi, can I leave now?” He tries to plead with his sad voice, trying to looks for Junsu’s affirmation. “Uhm, you can ask Jaejoong hyung about that.” Yunho looks at Jaejoong once more whilst the officer stares at him. “I guess you can leave if you’re okay now.” Yunho stands up and bows at Junsu and Jaejoong. He takes a step towards the door but his legs gave up because they are still hurt. He was about to fall on the floor once again but was caught in Jaejoong’s arms. Again.
Both men had the chance to stare at each other face to face, eyes roaming around the other’s face. Jaejoong focused on Yunho’s lips (he must have an attachment to those pair of lips) whilst Yunho said something he didn’t heard.
“Huh?”
“I said can you please let me go?” Jaejoong lets go immediately of Yunho, trying to hide the redness that are starting to form on his cheeks with fake coughing. He bows at them and leaves the room.
“What happened to him?” Yunho asks Junsu who in return shrugged at his question.
“Are you sure you want to leave now?” Yunho nods telling him that he has to go now because he still has chores to do and his little sister is waiting for him.
“Okay, then I’ll accompany you to the gate.” Junsu offers which Yunho accepts nicely. Jaejoong heard their conversation about chores, sister, and forgotten milk which Yunho has to ‘buy’. Jaejoong stayed behind the door, and only left when he heard footsteps near the door.
