I'm fascinated by your account, as my own experiences with pipes were all when I was quite small. My father took up pipe-smoking when I was a tot for similar reasons - he loved the scent of it and the feel of a pipe, and it went well with his artsy/bohemian/literary self image. It must have been too much trouble in the long run though, as it wasn't long before the beautiful pipes he'd acquired for their artistry spent all their time in a pipe-stand being dusted from time to time - but he was also a cigarette smoker (habit formed in the Navy) and maybe was too impatient for a nicotine fix to fuss with the pipes in the end.
I love the scent of tobacco shops - tobacco has an amazingly lovely scent when it isn't on fire.

Very true! I just keep sniffing the stuff I have laying out to dry. It smells good enough to eat! Although, I really enjoy the smell of it when it's burning, too.
