Owwwww! I know what you mean about that first moment, the "Oh cool, look at the inside of my body! Too bad it's about to hurt." Glad you had a friend who had a clue what to do - sounds like a good patch, hope it heals up cleanly. Anything that affects a hand is a pain in the rear to steer around while waiting for it to get better, good luck!
