Eunhyuk watches happily as the fireworks crackle and pop. He can’t help but feel as though his heart is on fire too, just like those colorful sparks. He glances over and sees Siwon smiling his big perfect smile and has to admit, it looks a lot better at night, lit up by the glow of the tiny lights dancing all across the pavement. He is distracted from the tiny fireworks they’re burning by the larger ones that have begun to go off in the sky. They remind him that a new year is coming, a new year where maybe, just maybe, he can be happy, have a better year than the one before. Siwon walks over to him with a glass of champagne.
“Happy New Year Eunhyuk,” he says, and Eunhyuk looks at the clock.
“It isn’t quite new years yet,” he says, and Siwon nods.
“I know,” he says, “but I can’t wait. Doesn’t it just feel like a time to enjoy. Don’t you feel excited?” Eunhyuk nods and smiles all the while thinking that somehow, he wishes the night could continue. He wants the new year to come as soon as possible, but he still doesn’t want the crackle of fireworks to end.

Kangin tries hard to sleep, but the nights are noiseless and lonesome, and the days pass by in a blur of screams and talking. He always wonders why he can’t sleep, or in his own bed at least, because lately he’s been falling asleep in busses and cars and even on the couch. And he doesn’t know why.
“Maybe you miss him,” says Shindong one day, and Kangin thinks it could be true. After all, he wasn’t alone then, the silence didn’t scream at him then like it does now.
“So how do I fix it?” he asks. Shindong has to think carefully about this, but every quiet second is driving Kangin insane.
“Maybe…try to get him back?”
“I have,” Kangin says, and Shindong grimaces.
“Sorry,” he says, but Kangin just shakes his head.
“What about him did you like so much?” asks Shindong, and it’s Kangin’s turn to think. Finally, he has a reply.
“I loved the way his heart beat really soft, but still audibly, and the sound of his breathing, gentle and calm, and most of all, I just really loved the way his voice sounded. He sang to me when we were alone sometimes.” Shindong nods and hands him a CD case. Kangin just stares at it.
“Our CD?” he asks.
“Listen to it when you go to bed and you’ll be able to hear his voice all the time.”

Evening falls and Siwon is standing on the balcony of the Super Junior dorms. He looks out over the city and sees nothing but a sea of lights. As beautiful as they are, they don’t stop the silent ache in his heart. In fact, the beauty almost amplifies the ache, though he isn’t quite sure why. It’s just something about the way the calm settles around the city that makes him feel even lonelier today than usual. He lets his view wander to the balcony next door to him. It isn’t late, and he sees that the lights in Kibum’s dorm are still on. Suddenly, the youngest himself steps out onto the ledge, letting light spill out into the darkness of the evening. Siwon looks away, for no reason in particular, letting his gaze wander to the moon and the stars, then back down to earth again. But the lights of the city make his heart swell with pain. They cause him to long for something, for someone. Then, he hears a voice.
“On evenings like this, looking out at the city, it seems like, somewhere down there, among all those people, is someone to love.” He looks over and sees Kibum, looking at him.
“Yeah,” he replies, “but sometimes I wonder what will happen if there is no one.” Kibum thinks for a second before answering him.
“Then maybe,” he says, “you just have to look a little higher up.”
