I'm glad I don't live in a state that allows open carrying, although the whole UCSB thing doesn't mean we're any safer. It just means we can't see impending doom until it happens. I'm not sure how many more minutes or seconds seeing the gun buys you. Maybe you'll be wary enough to get away in time. Hope so.
I'm sorry you feel this way. I think that there are situations in which it's appropriate to carry a weapon, and situations in which it isn't. Just as an example, my mom used to drive home from work at 3am, and she did so with a gun on the seat, because there was a realistic chance she might need it.
When I drive home to Texas in a few months, I will do so with a gun. I hope very much that I will never have to use it. But I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
I think the gun fanatics walking around the Capitol with semi-automatic rifles are absolutely doing it to be intimidating and to threaten violence, and I don't like that. Anyone who uses a gun to intimidate is immature and not a responsible gun owner. So I can understand why you feel the way you do- those people scare me too!
