best commentary I've seen on twitter so far is

"Bottom line: A Confederate terrorist killed more than AQ has in US since 2009, and the state he attacked flies his flag to honor his cause."

What's going on is that the systemic/endemic racism in our country is becoming more and more visible, and that seems to be giving some folks permission to act out; and the backlash against the violence is scaring others into acting out. Racists are seeing their special place on top of the heap eroding and don't want to lose "white privilege"….

I hear you. It's disheartening. And Gawker posted a thing this morning that the little fucker told the police that the people in the church were so nice to him that he almost didn't carry out his "mission."
