I feel like I'm on the edge of the world out here - the point where humanity gradually fades away and the forces of nature take over. I spent my morning in a bookstore cafe today in a strip mall, where all of the entrances and exits are in the front window-face of the building.

I've seen some places with tight security before, but I think putting shoplifting scanners around the emergency exit is a little extreme.
