I have seen this particular behavior in so many venues, but especially in the SCA and among D&D players. It's all about the one-upmanship and competition. Is this a boy thing and girls pick it up in our culture to be "equal" with boys?

Aaugh yes. I think I had reached my limit of competition in conversation. Actually, I've been at that limit for over a year, but now I finally got it all out of my system.
Really, though, I think nerds should all try to figure out ways to band together and be awesome with each other, because we certainly experience hurdles doing that with non-nerds. And then sometimes we're our own worst enemies, because we alienate potential nerd-allies. Nerd isn't an elite organization! Everybody nerd!
