Chapter 2

Mokuyoubi

Jin walked around the hotel lobby and pretended to be interested in the odd painting on the wall. He turned every time he heard footsteps expecting to see the girl, but it was always a different person.

The receptionist had been observing him ever since he went there.

Jin glanced at his watch. It was not even 7 o’clock yet. He didn’t know why, but he woke up really early even though he was very tired. The hotel bed didn’t feel weird to him anymore, but he still couldn’t get back to sleep.

After he got bored waiting in his room-and even outside of it-he decided to go down to the lobby where he did some more waiting.

Someone cleared a throat behind him. Jin spun around and saw the girl smirking at him, one hand on her waist and the other holding a picnic basket.

“Waiting for someone?” she asked. Her voice now sounded better than it did last night.

Jin smiled and bowed.

“I was…Ohayou gozaimasu!”

She grinned and walked over to him and attempted to squish him with a bear hug.

“Ohayou,” she greeted back. She held up the basket for Jin to take. “I hope you’re hungry.”

***

Jin happily rubbed his full stomach as he followed the girl on the sidewalk.

“Hurry up!” she called.

Jin ran to her side and casually held her hand.

“Thank you for breakfast.” He smiled. “It was delicious.”

“No problem.” She smiled back. “I’ve always wanted to cook for you. I’m glad you liked it.”

“Maybe you can cook for me all the time from now on.”
“Hey! That’s not a bad idea! And you can pay me!” she said with too much enthusiasm, earning her a gentle swat at the back of her head.

“Baka…” Jin chuckled.
“What? That way I have an excuse to see you every day, right?” she reasoned. “Maybe I can even force the other guys to let me cook for them too. I can be your official cook or something. If I bring food for all of KAT-TUN, I would be less suspicious to press people, ne?”

She laughed at what she said and looked around for a taxi, oblivious to the impact her little joke has made on Jin.

It had been seven long months.

In those months, the two of them were able to keep their relationship alive by their consistent exchange of emails and long phone calls. However, Jin was aware that it could only last so long. It’s true that their secret “online” relationship had its perks.

For one, Jin didn’t have to worry about paparazzi. Plus, their phone calls and emails were unknown and inaccessible to the world-except maybe to brilliant hackers, secret agents, or superspies-but he doubted that there were fan girls or media people in those groups anyway.

As far as the rest of the world knew, their relationship was non-existent. As long as things stayed that way, it would be fine.

But that was the problem.

Jin didn’t want things to stay that way.

He wanted more for the two of them. He didn’t want their relationship to be restrained to emails and phone calls and relying on different media for their news about each other…him reading her blog posts for the latest “updates” on her life, and her reading magazines for the latest updates on his.

Something was wrong.

“What’s wrong?” the girl asked, snapping Jin back to reality. He gave her a small smile and shook his head.

“It’ll never work.”
“What will never work?” she frowned.

He placed a hand atop her head and leveled his eyes with hers.

“You as a KAT-TUN cook…” he laughed. “It’s impossible.”

She stuck her tongue out at him and made a face. He smiled at her gently.

“So just make it work with me, okay?”

She laughed again, and Jin wished he would always hear the sound of it.

“Okay,” she nodded. ‘I’ll make it work with you.”

***

Jin froze when he saw where the girl had taken him. He hesitated to get off the taxi for fear of being recognized.

“N-Nande…” he mumbled nervously as he pulled his cap lower over his eyes.
“You’re not scared are you?” the girl teased.

He looked at her in disbelief.

“It’s just a shopping mall…”
“Yeah, a shopping mall with people! Lots of them!”

She lifted his cap a bit to see his eyes better.

“Dai-jou-bu…” she assured him. “I just need to do some last minute Christmas shopping. The people here would be too busy grabbing the items on sale to even look at you.”

She pushed his cap back down and smiled before saying “You’re not in Japan.” in Japanese. She paused before stepping out of the taxi and held her hand out to Jin.

“Ikimasho ka?”

Jin looked at her hand and then at her face.

“I promise I won’t let go.” She said with a sheepish grin.

Jin bit his lip and nodded before finally taking her hand.

“Ikimasho.”

***

It was just as she said. The people inside the mall were too busy with their last-minute shopping to even give him a passing glance, or to give anyone a passing glance for that matter. He was able to breathe easier.

Back home, he could never go to a crowded mall to shop and not be noticed. He couldn’t go anywhere and not be noticed. He felt happy and liberated as he blended with the crowd. He looked like a normal guy who accompanied his girlfriend to the mall.

Girlfriend…

The word brought a smile to his lips.

Since he never had to introduce her to anyone, he never had to use the term “girlfriend” to refer to her. Usually, he just calls her by her first name. KT-TUN, on the other hand, often only used pronouns when talking about her.

How is she? Did you talk to her already?

Actually referring to her as his girlfriend made him feel fuzzy.

“What are you grinning about?”

He looked down at his girlfriend who was giving him a weird look. She seemed amused. Jin chuckled.

“Are you almost done?” Jin asked to change the subject.
“Ooh, just one more stop and I’m done.” She answered with bright eyes.

She started to maneuver her way through the busy shoppers, all the while holding Jin’s hand tightly. They came to a ‘clearing’ and it was only then that she let go of his hand.

“Wait here.” She told him.
“W-What? Where are you going?”
“I’ll be right back.”

Before Jin could say another word, she was already lost among the sea of faces and Jin suddenly felt a little nervous for being left alone. He leaned against the wall and wondered where she was.

Although he had already memorized every detail about her today-how she wore her hair, what outfit she used, and even her accessories-it still wasn’t easy to spot her.

Jin thought about what it was like for the girl to come to Japan to see him. She went to Japan alone and she did not have any concrete plans as to how she was going to see Jin. She told him one that she was only thinking about getting to Japan first.

Everything is easier after you’ve jumped the first hurdle in a race, she would say. So with that in mind, she went to his country the first chance she got, equipped with what little she knew of the Japanese language and her great faith in him.

“Somehow I just knew you’d come for me when I’m there…so I just waited.”

Jin smiled as he remembered the particular email where she said those words. At the same time, Jin remembered the very reason why he didn’t think twice about going to her country.

“Yosh…”

He pulled his cap lower-as if it could be lower than it already was-crouched in front of the wall, and waited.

She would come for him.

***

Jin found himself sitting on crossed legs on the floor as he watched the shoppers pass by. They would decrease gradually only to be replaced by new shoppers. He didn’t realize a lot of people shopped at the last minute, and his girl was one of them.

It had been more than an hour since she left and Jin was starting to get worried that something happened to her. He picked up the shopping bags she left him and stood up. He was tempted to go and look for her.

Wait here.

Jin wished he had a cell phone with him that actually worked in her country so he could at least call to know if she was okay. Jin made a mental note to buy a cell phone.

I’ll be right back.

He scanned the crowds again. He was certain that he could make his way back to the same spot if he chose to locate her. After watching people go to and fro, he had the mall figured out already…or that specific floor at the very least.

Wait here.

He was starting to feel annoyed and frustrated that he couldn’t do anything to ease lessen his worries. He wanted to find her right away. He wanted to make sure she was alright. He knows that he didn’t have to just sit there and wait. He can put an end to the hundred worst case scenarios that were flooding his brain, and just go and look for her.

I’ll be right back.

Jin sighed and leaned back against the wall, resigning to wait for her some more.

***

The girl smiled and fought back tears as she watched Jin from afar.

She had been gone for quite a while and knew that Jin would be worried. She looked down at the tiny bag she was holding that contained her purchase. It wasn’t easy to buy it, but it would have taken her only 30 minutes to make her way to the store, choose the item, pay for it, and go back to where Jin was.

It would have…but she decided to watch him a few meters away, behind a row of tall mannequins, just to see what Jin was going to do.

She breathed in deeply and blinked hard before putting on a smile and making her way towards him. Jin was staring at the floor now as he waited…

…waited for her.

It was almost two hours since she left him there. Even though she saw him looking very anxious already, he still did not leave, just as she had told him.

When she was only a few feet away, Jin noticed her and his expression changed from surprise to relief and then to anger, just as quickly as her pace turned from walking to running.

Jin was about to say something when she suddenly wrapped her arms around his neck and succumbed to the tears.

“A-Are you okay?”

She held him tighter and nodded.

“I’m great…” she told him.
“Then…why? Why are you crying?”

The girl buried her face on the crook of his neck and laughed in between sobs.

“Arigatou…” she whispered. “Thank you for waiting…”

***

Jin frowned and pouted as he very carefully tied a ribbon around a neatly-wrapped box that the girl handed him. They were back at the hotel and Jin was helping her wrap the presents that she bought.

“You’re really into perfecting that ribbon, huh?” the girl teased.
“No…”

Jin finished tying the ribbon and quietly admired his work.

“I was just thinking…” he told her.
“Oh? What about?”
“About how weird my girlfriend is.”

He fought the urge to smile as he used the word “girlfriend” again. She giggled.

“That’s a first…you calling me your girlfriend, I mean.” she said with a smile as she finished wrapping the last box.
“Well, you are my girlfriend, aren’t you?”

She laughed and nodded. She tucked her hair behind her ear and Jin saw that she was wearing his ring on her finger. It was the one he gave her before she left Japan.

“I guess I am, huh?”

Jin raised a brow at her.

“So you’re not sure?”

She shook her head and crawled to where he was sitting on the bed and knelt in front of him.

“I am your girlfriend.” She said firmly. “And you are my boyfriend.”

Boyfriend. He was her boyfriend.

The word brought an even bigger smile on his face. His smiled slowly turned into a smirk as he inched his face closer to hers.

“So…” he said in a low voice. “Are any of these gifts for your boyfriend?”

She smirked back and narrowed her eyes and Jin felt his heart race.

“Dame.” She replied quickly before touching Jin’s collar bone and making him yelp. She laughed at him and stood up to go to the mini fridge. “I wouldn’t ask you to go shopping with me if I was going to buy you a present now, would I?”

Jin pouted again and rubbed his collar bone.

“That’s mean! I waited for you for a long time and you didn’t even get me a present.”
“Did you get me a present?”
“Well…no, but that’s because-“
“Then you’re not getting one either!” she interrupted.

They both grew silent and just glared at each other before they laughed at the same time at their playful little banter. The girl popped open a can of soda and took a sip. Then she walked over and handed it to Jin.

“I’m sorry I made you wait.” She said, as if the soda was her peace offering.
“It’s fine. I can do it every day.”

She chuckled and gently fixed a part of Jin’s hairstyle that bothered her.

“Soo desu ka?”
“Yeah…I’m Akanishi Jin. I can do anything.”
“Oh really?”
“Yeah.”
“You’re sure?”
“I’m positive.”

She nodded and Jin smugly helped himself to the ice cold soda.

“Then…” she rested her hands on her knees and leaned close to him as Jin continued to drink, his heart started to race again as she got closer. “Can you… come to my parents’ house tomorrow?”

Without warning, soda sprayed out from Jin’s mouth, to the girl’s face. He started coughing incessantly while the girl straightened up and blinked.

“Yeah…You can do anything Akanishi Jin…”
