Summary:  It’s almost like it never happened except things are different.
Disclaimer: I own no parts of FNL.
Notes: Follow-up to Wrong When It’s Right. It’s kind of necessary to read that one to understand this one. Title and lyrics from Who Am I To You by Norah Jones. The first time I heard this song I thought of these two.

They’ve done it. Well not it. They’ve crossed a line. They’ve done things. Things they probably shouldn’t have considering their history. Considering they’re in the middle of Texas even if those rumors about the Mayor may be true.

And that’s all they’ve done. That one time. They’ve only kissed and kissed and kissed some more on Tyra’s worn couch. Lyla remembers the full body press of Tyra’s long frame against her own. Skin cool by the air conditioning but radiating a heat Lyla’s sure she’d matched in its intensity.

They just kissed, made out, did what kids new to the whole relationship thing do. It’s not like Lyla expected it to go any further than that. Hell, she hadn’t even expected that to happen. It’s just by now, nearly three weeks later, she’d expected something more. At least some more kissing. Nothing’s happened.

When I look in your eyes

I can feel the butterflies

Could you find a love in me

Could you carve me in a tree

Don't fill my heart with lies

It’s almost like it never happened except things are different. Not weird. Things are better. Like the make out session pushed them to being better friends. The kind of friends they should’ve been when their boyfriends were best friends. She often finds Tyra at her locker, leaning against it, waiting. Sometimes she’s looking down, hair making a curtain around her face. When Lyla approaches, Tyra looks up and smiles. It’s all Lyla can do not to reach out and touch that smile with a finger or worse her lips in front of everyone. She doesn’t though. She just smiles back and asks, “What’s up?” They make plans to just hang out or study or work on whatever latest project Mrs. Taylor has given them.

She’s really confused about the whole thing. She figured it was mutual. The way Tyra had asked “You sure Garrity?” The way she had smiled when nodded. Tyra had said “good”, smiled then leaned for a kiss. Lyla felt the want from Tyra every time her lips met hers.

Now it’s like… well Lyla’s not sure what it’s like. And she’s afraid to ask. And she really shouldn’t be. She’s come too far in the last few months to back down from anything but she can’t. She doesn’t want to ruin anything. Because maybe it was just the beer for Tyra. Maybe the beer made her want something and Lyla just happened to be there. Lyla knows Tyra hasn’t been seeing anybody.

Lyla got nothing against Landry Clarke. She doesn’t really know him. She knows he’s a good guy; he has to be if he’s best friends with Matt Saracen. She knows he’s on the football team and like a lot of other people she wonders just how that happened. But since her life is vastly different than it was a year ago she figures the same can go for lots of other people. She knows that he’s got it bad for Tyra the way he keeps coming around.

Jason’s not on the team anymore and Tim and Tyra are done but they still find themselves at the games sometimes. They sit by themselves because it would be a little weird for them to be sitting with each other’s families. Or they sit with Julie and Mrs. Taylor. No matter where they are Landry finds Tyra and smiles at her like she’s all his. Lyla’s not sure if Tyra’s the least bit interested. She’s never brought it up and neither has Lyla. That is until Lyla overhears Landry asking Tyra out.

Lyla doesn’t even wait for Tyra’s response. And maybe she should but she’s just so pissed at the moment because Tyra should’ve told him a long time ago she’s not interested. That there’s somebody else.

What am I to you

Tell me darling true

To me you are the sea

Vast as you can be

And deep the shade of blue

Their mothers don’t get it. It’s not that they don’t like it, Lyla and Tyra being friends that is. It’s just like they’re waiting for the other shoe to drop. For them to stop being friends because they found out what the other is really like. It’s not likely to happen. They know each other now, better than they did before when they thought they knew everything. So whenever the other comes over they each get a look that says, ‘don’t hurt my girl or you’ll have to answer to me.’ Tyra didn’t think Ms. Garrity had it in her but Lyla knew Ms. Colette did.

She gets the look the minute Ms. Collette answers the door.

“Is Tyra home?” Lyla asks, wanting her to be and not to be at the same time.

“Yeah. Come in.”

“Thanks but I can’t. I can’t stay. I just have to talk to Tyra real quick.” She says it fast, nervously and gets another look from Tyra’s mom. Lyla smiles, it feels forced and fake.

“Okay.” She leaves, the screen door banging against the door frame at the same time she calls for Tyra.

“Garrity,” Tyra says. Lyla doesn’t mind being called by her last name now. Tyra doesn’t say it like she used to. Now it’s softer, to match the smile she gives Lyla.

“You can date Landry if you want,” she blurts out without meaning to. She hadn’t wanted to say that, at least not like that.

If my sky should fall

Would you even call

Opened up my heart

I never want to part

I'm giving you the ball

Tyra’s look of shock is quickly replaced with a smirk. She doesn’t say anything though. Just steps out onto the steps, which causes Lyla to back down. They’re on even ground now, not eye to eye, but at least it’s better than it was a few seconds ago.

“I didn’t know I needed your permission Garrity.” The disdain slips back into her name.

“He’s not your type.”

“And you are?” Tyra stands, arms crossed, her voice low so she won’t be overheard.

It stings. Probably way more than it should. Lyla doesn’t care though. She feels how she feels and she won’t apologize for it. There’s nothing left to say so she drives off, determined not to look back to see if Tyra watches her go. Tyra stays long after Lyla’s gone.

They don’t speak for three days, easily slipping back into old ways when they somehow managed to avoid each other most of the time. It’s only when her dad takes her and her siblings to dinner do they speak.

Lyla really didn’t want to come to Applebees but her brother and sister were insistent, being real brats about it. And her dad is Mr. Whatever-You-Want now so she came hoping Tyra was off or at least she wouldn’t be the one to wait on them. No such luck.

Tyra plasters on that fake smile Lyla knows too well and treats them like she always has. It makes Lyla a little sick. She isn’t doing okay and she wants to know Tyra feels the same.

“Lyla can I speak to you for a minute before you go?” Tyra asks during dessert. The question startles her, not quite sure she heard correctly. “Lyla?”

“Uh, um. Can it wait?” Lyla asks not really looking at Tyra.

“It’ll be quick I promise.” Tyra turns away from her then to start to talking to her dad, making up some story about this new thing from Mrs. Taylor. “It’s got to do with this fundraiser Mrs. T got us working on.” By the time she’s done, her dad is telling her stay and talk. “Yeah, I’ll just give her a ride home.”

Lyla watches her family leave and Tyra nods at her to follow, hears her say, “Claude, I’m taking my break now.”

Lyla follows Tyra. She’s angry at Tyra, at her dad, at herself for not saying, “No. I’m going home.”

She’s going to say something as soon as they get to… the bathroom. “Tyra, what…” She stops at the feel of Tyra’s hand around her wrist, pulling her into the ladies room’s furthest stall. Tyra has her pressed up against the wall, her thigh between Lyla’s and her lips on hers before she can say anything else.

When I look in your eyes

I can feel the butterflies

I love you when you're blue

Tell me darlin' true

What am I to you

Lyla doesn’t protest. She opens her mouth wide, welcomes the touch of Tyra’s tongue. She welcomes the way Tyra’s thigh slides up high until she’s lightly grinding on it.

They stay like that for who knows how long, coming up for air every now and again. The opening of the bathroom door breaks them apart finally, each to opposite sides of the stall. They laugh, the sound muffled by their hands. They stare at each other, waiting until they are alone again. But even then neither of them speaks right away.

Finally Lyla opens her mouth to speak when Tyra says, “Some girl named Jean likes Landry and I told him to go for it.”

“Okay,” is all Lyla can manage, her heart trying to beat itself out of her chest.

“That’s all you have to say Garrity?”

Lyla makes a face. “Well, is that all you have to say?”

“I think you know how I feel since we I brought you in here.” Tyra sounds indignant about the whole thing.

“Nice place, too.” Lyla makes a show of looking around the stall. “You really know how to treat a girl.”

“Don’t make fun,” Tyra tells her.

Silence settles over them again until Lyla says, “How long until you’re off?”

Tyra checks her watch. “A couple of hours.”

“Oh.”

“But I can act like I’m sick. It’s not fair that you have to wait around so long now that I think about it.” Tyra looks apologetic.

“What’s another couple of hours?” Lyla says as she smiles brightly because she really means it.

“You sure?” Tyra asks.

“Yes. You know as along as....” She steps into Tyra’s space again. She doesn’t touch but she does stare straight into her eyes. “As long as you’re serious. I’m serious.”

Tyra kisses her again and it’s all the answer she needs.

I will you love when you're blue
