One thing I wished is that people would stop addressing the manifestation of the problem rather than the problem itself.

this is SO true! I just did a media review for my Contemporary Britain class on whether women should wear the Muslim Veils - and my main argument was that the discussion isn't so much on the issue of the veils as it is on multiculturalism in British society and how it is being handled. If the media and everyone else would wake up and realize this, then it wouldn't be an issue at all. buuut unfortunately everything just gets concentrated on to one issue and nothing gets resolved.

Oh and in London they're 'Toilets' - or 'the loo' - or even 'the WC' (for wash closet). I usually say the restroom - people look at you funny if you say bathroom, but I think toilets is just too...blegh. Restroom is a happy medium :-P

well, what people like Jack Straw and Tony Blair are saying is that it creates a communication barrier - figuratively and literally. A kindergarten teacher was suspended from her school for refusing to take off her veil after students allegedly complained that they couldn't understand her with it on - and that's really where the whole thing escalated. Some people feel that it is also a sign of oppression - one big thing that the general world thinks about Islamic religion is that it's extremely oppressive to women - so the veil is just a visual sign of that. I think a lot of people equate it to the burqa ( ... )
