[series]: Pandora Hearts
[character]: Alice
[character history / background]: Info can be found here but it’s really vague so I went through and wrote my own. (This took me two days to do. :< )

Alice appears before Oz as a little girl but is revealed to be a chain, a creature from the Abyss with certain powers. Not only is Alice the strongest chain, she is a special chain; she takes on the appearance of a human girl when not in her chain form, the Bloodstained Black Rabbit, (B-Rabbit), and doesn’t need to eat humans like other chains. She and Oz make a contract, which binds them together and opens a passageway for them to escape from the Abyss. However, theirs is an illegal contract and, if she uses her powers too often for too long, both she and Oz will be dragged to the deepest part of Abyss.

Alice tells Oz and co. that her goal in coming out of Abyss is to seek her lost memories. She then travels with them and the organization Pandora to find pieces of her past and figure out the link between her and Abyss.

In Retrace: XVI Keeper of the Secret, Alice and co. travel to the dimension of the chain called Chesire, a chain without a contractor whose sole purpose is to protect a secret: Alice’s memories. However, contrary to the other times Alice found memories, this dimension gives her a feeling of terror rather than nostalgia and happiness. There, Cheshire tells Oz that Alice created him and this dimension to hide her memories of the Tragedy of Sabrie.
Alice was in the city of Sabrie when it was dragged into the Abyss by the Baskervilles 100 years before the manga takes place. In Chesire’s dimension, Oz sees the memory of the human Alice being killed by Vincent Nightray on the day of the Tragedy. This fact is only known to Oz and Break but the terror Alice felt in Chesire’s dimension stays with her. It doesn’t stop her from continuing her search.

The connection between the blonde haired man name Jack and Alice is exposed in Retrace: XXXI, where Alice is shown locked up in a tower, surrounded only by dolls and puppets. Jack became Alice’s only friend, as none of the Baskervilles came to see her in the tower. She greatly cherished Jack, but feared the cruel hearted Vincent that always said hurtful things, cut up her dolls, and killed her cat Chesire.

Break witnessed Vincent coming to the Abyss to bully the will of Abyss, who also goes by ‘Alice’. While talking about this experience with Alice, Oz, others, and Duke Barma, the Duke reveals entries from Jack’s journal where he wrote about Alice. Jack realized that there were two different sides to Alice, one sweet and innocent, one harsh and malicious. The two were twins born from a human in Abyss and were connected by that darkness. Thus, the will of the Abyss is Alice’s twin.

After finding all this out, Oz decides to go to Sabrie where everything began. Despite having heard of her connection to the will of the Abyss, Alice follows an illusion of her memory. She finds the image of herself and Jack standing before a tomb marked Lacie, the song that Glen wrote playing from Jack’s pocketwatch. He tells Alice that Lacie was someone important to Glen but was sacrificed to the Abyss. Who exactly Lacie is isn’t clearly explained, but Alice doesn’t stay to see if anything else is said. Oz uses B-Rabbit’s power and calls for her, and she decides to return for him. After reaching out to see if she can touch Jack, she says it’s just a memory and not a piece of Jack’s soul, then turns away saying “See you next time, Jack!"
[character abilities]: Alice is the chain called Bloodstained Black Rabbit, which is the strongest chain in the Abyss. She takes the form of a giant, black rabbit with a scythe and destroys other chains while usually yelling something like “You’re an eyesore!” Her power is connected to Oz, however, and the contract is sealed by Gil’s Raven. So if Oz and Gil aren’t around, she’s pretty much only good at kicking and hitting things.
[character personality]: At first, Alice's one and only goal was to retrieve her lost memories. She had no real need for Oz and the others' company, except as a means to travel to where her memories might be hidden. In the first few chapters, she tells Oz that she doesn't need their friendship because it's for weak people and she has no use for it. But as time went on, she got more and more attached to them, specifically Oz, and began traveling with them just to stay by his side. Now, she continues to search for her memories while protecting him and lending him her powers as B-Rabbit.

In general, Alice is an innocent young girl that is still trying to learn how the world works. Emotions aren't something granted to a Chain, as their one and only purpose is to find humans to eat. But Alice is different from other Chains; she is powerful and loves fighting like most, but not for the purpose of eating or becoming stronger. She fights just to prove her own strength, or in later cases, to protect herself and her companions. This difference is also shown in her human form: the way she has emotions, doesn't eat humans, and the fact that she even has a human form at all, something the other Chains lack.

Alice easily becomes confused by these newfound emotions and Sharon tries to help her with it but she tends to misunderstand the meanings, for example, when Alice bites Oz's cheek to cheer him up after seeing two people kissing in one of Sharon's books. She's naive and uninformed, so the way she looks at things can seem childish. When she becomes jealous of Oz being with other people, she doesn't see it as jealousy but this "strange burning feeling inside" and gets angry that he's not with her. He's her manservant, so how can he be leaving her? Being that she was alone in Abyss for so long, she still has trouble adjusting to the presence of others that actually care about her, and has difficulty accepting the fact that maybe she cares about them, too. Every now and then, there is an ominous voice in the back of her mind that asks her why she does the things she does, and how she can act human when she is nothing more than the Bloodstained Black Rabbit. Who or what this voice is, whether it's a memory of Vincent Nightray or the will of the Abyss, is not clear, but she tends to get disillusioned when she hears it. Oz's friendly and warm words have broken her away from this tendency and she hears the voice less and less as time goes on. She warms up to the idea of friends and starts showing affection to the people around her, in her own abusive way.

[Voice]
[The device is on the floor near where she landed in the Square. It’s on, so the post is her talking, though she isn’t aware of the thing at all. Strikes are thoughts.]
Oz.
Where is Oz? I have to return to him.
Wait a second.
Where am I? This doesn’t look like Sabrie anymore. Another illusion?
[Silence while she looks around. It doesn’t seem like a memory, everything is tangible and real. It’s nothing like she’s ever seen before, with bright lights and large buildings. But it was nothing like Abyss, either. She began to panic a little.]
Oz?
Oz! Where are you you, you useless manservant!
…Seaweed Head?
Alone…?
But haven’t you always been?
[She stays quiet while she tries to regain her composure. Her voice then grows distant as she runs after someone nearby]
Hey! You there, peasant! Tell me where I am!

[third person / log sample]: That warm feeling, a light brighter than the sun.

Alice headed forward into the bright clearing before her, the feeling of nostalgia flooding into her like an open invitation. She knew this was it: one of her memories. And unlike before, it wasn’t like with Cheshire, it wasn’t like with Duke Barma. The feeling was warm and she knew she would find him if she followed it.

Jack…!

And there he was, standing beneath a grand tree that towered above him and spread throughout the room. Sunlight was filtering in through the leaves and she could see a grave marker beneath the tree. A tomb. Alice watched as the illusion-Alice and Jack spoke to each other, talking about the song coming from Jack’s pocket watch.

“It’s called…Lacie.”

Lacie. Who is Lacie?

Her eyes followed Jack’s hand to the tombstone and saw the name there. Glen’s important person, sacrificed to Abyss. The reason he was so full of despair. Alice was watching Jack’s sad expression as he spoke of her when she was suddenly drawn away by a strange tugging sensation.

This is…Oz

She turned back to the image of Jack and herself. She didn’t understand the meaning of this memory, who Lacie was or why she was here. But she wanted to. She reached out to Jack longingly, but her fingers merely passed through him. Smiling sadly to herself, she turned her back.

“See you next time, Jack.”

She took off in the opposite direction and the illusion faded. But where she expected to see the rock faces and cliffs of the hole, Alice found herself instead in an entirely new place altogether. There was a whole new blinding light, but not from the sun. Signs and shops, people and noise; it was like nothing she’d ever seen before. She looked around wildly, lost and alone.

This isn’t an illusion. There’s nothing like this back home.

Home? Where is home?

“O-Oz?” Alice called out meekly, wandering forward a little bit. “Oz?!”

Alone. Alone. All alone again.

“Oz! Where are you, you stupid manservant?!” she called out, looking around desperately. “Seaweed head?”

Jack.

Alice could feel that chill in the back of her mind, that horrid feeling she hadn’t felt in so long. Abyss was calling to her, reminding her that she was alone and always would be. Biting down her shaking, she lifted her head and looked for someone that could help her. She was alone, but Oz would come for her. He had to. It was his duty as her slave. No need for those fears now.

Friends.

“Hey!” she called to some random passerby, “Peasant! Tell me where I am!”
