“Chii?” In; “Dai-chan?” In; “Ryutaro?” In; “Hikaru?” In; and…Keito??”

“Oh come on! He’s late again!” shouted Yuto as the roll call began.

I quietly fed my ears with my earphones with a song from Bowling for Soup, “High School Never Ends” just to comfort myself from the irritating idea of Keito being always the late bird of the gang.

It was the most awaited month of the whole group, where the sun was glaring up so bright over the clear blue sky and the wind of summer whistled a very warm yet relaxing breath. We were all excited to go to the rest house of our new friend Keito somewhere in the southern part of Osaka for a week of escape from the noisy and polluted environment of the metropolis.

At last after an hour of waiting for Keito’s arrival, we were then all set and comfortably sat inside a 10-seated family van of the group’s rich kid, Daiki. Of course he was our driver that time. As the engine started, the van exploded with a loud sound from Ryutaro’s DS, a banging laugh from Chii who was chatting with our clown Hikaru, and the smell of Daiki’s fish burger. The whole vehicle was like a water-filled kettle boiled under the scorching heat of the sun.

But one point at the vehicle was as cold as the freezing waters of the Arctic, that was where Keito was sitting. Even the noise was trying to embrace me to irritation. My skin could still feel the numbness and chilling coldness that surrounded Keito. I did not know why he was so quiet since his arrival a couple of hours ago. It was maybe because of the words of disappointment thrown to him by Yuto just because of arriving later or perhaps he was just not in the mood. I did not really know…

The mere thought of what was bothering Keito helped me to get rid of the noise around me that I fell asleep.

“S C R E E E E E C H ! WHOAAAAAAAAAAH!” a sudden stop and a strong push made the half of my body to go forward and bump my head to the back part of Chinen’s seat.

“What’s the matter?!”I bursted on my seat.

“Duh! We’re here!” said Hikaru in a fluctuating tune.

I couldn’t really imagine how fast we’ve traveled and then, we were standing at the gigantic gate engraved with Keito’s surname. Their vacation house was undeniably huge, a 300-meter square lot I supposed. As Keito opened the gate for all of us, everybody were amazed by the building’s architecture. It seemed that Western and Eastern cultures came to collide just to build an amazing residential masterpiece. Ryutaro started to take pictures through his digital camera. With him were Chinen and Hikaru posing before the flashes of the camera. Everyone was enjoying the place and the nature-inspired ambience. The tweeting sounds of the birds, the fresh provincial air, and the mossy green trees and shrubs that abounded in the area made me eager to explore more of the prefecture. As I scanned the front face of the house, my eyes were suddenly focused on the statue of a weeping lady standing on the rooftop. She was holding a knife that was buried on her chest as if she was trying to remove it. My imagination was postponed for a while because of a sudden tap on my shoulder;

“This is actually our ancestral house. My mom and grandfather used to live here back when I was in elementary days. Come on, let’s get inside! Anyway, we still have many things to do.” It was Keito. It was the first time he talked since we left Tokyo.

“Oh! Yes, let’s go!” I replied excitedly.

We had a great fun that night. The whole group prepared a special dinner for all of us. And after a sumptuous supper, we shared and satisfied ourselves with bottles of imported wines - from Daiki of course.

As hours quickly passed, the spirit of wine engulfed everybody’s control. Chinen hit the floor and started swaying his body while Hikaru was loudly singing Disturbia by Rihanna. Ryutaro was then enjoying more wines and foods that were widely-spread on the center table. The celebration was stopped when Daiki screamed;

“WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!” Daiki was rolling down on the floor. Ryutaro came to the rescue.

“I cannot take it anymore, it hurts!”

“What’s wrong?” asked Hikaru who also got down on the floor to help.

Daiki suddenly stood up. All eyes were nailed on his blank face.

“I think… I need to go to the lavatory. I cannot take it anymore. I need to pee! Juz kiddin! Hahaha!” and he left running to the bathroom. Ryutaro was after him trying to pour wine over Daiki.

“Sigh!” I breathed out as I gulped the half of my ice-filled wine.

The next moments became more noisy yet funful. It’s good thing that we were not in the metro and no neighbors would throw stones over the roof and on the window panes.

The night just reached its absolute silence at around 1 a.m. when all of us were lying like helpless street children on the floor of the receiving room of Keito’s vacation house.

***

A pain in the lower part of my abdomen woke up. I needed the lavatory. As I tried to stand up, I was surprised. I was alone.

“Where are they?” I whispered.

My head seemed to crack. I looked down to check my watch. It was just 2 a.m. all lights were off. I stood up and searched for the switches but I ended up a loser.

“Hey, Daiki! Hikaru! Guys… where are you?”

“Packing for tomorrow? Oh, come on! Too early for that!(burp!)”

But I got no answer not even a little response. Only the cicadas were lonely chanting. Suddenly, mass of cold wind blew. Fear started to eat me.

“What’s going on here?!” I could feel the icy wind I felt in the van when I was looking to Keito.

“Where are you guys? This is not a good joke! Fuck!”

I nearly fainted when Daiki appeared at my back.

“Holy shit! Where are the others?” I asked.

Daiki knelt and burst into tears. His hands were coated with red, thick fluid. BLOOD?

“Where are they?” I repeated, shouting. Daiki was cold and shaking.

“They’re gone! Run… run…” he shouted, I said run! He… is… coming!”

“Wait! What the hell is going on? And who’s coming?”

“Save your life!”

And after that Daiki fell to silence. I kept asking him but his head was with his neck.

“Run… run… run…” I could hear deep, hollow and dry voices. As I turned my back, Hikaru, Ryutaro and Chinen were slowly walking. Their necks were slightly cut and seriously bleeding. Keito was after them carrying a blood-stained knife.

I stepped back. My eyes were pinned to the four bloody creatures walking towards us. I tried to search, without looking, for the body of Daiki helplessly sitting on the black carpet of the room.

“Let’s go Daiki! Stand up there. He’s a freak! Come on!” as I heavily waved my hands at the back, hoping for a body to move. But as I turned to run, Daiki was not there.

I looked back and to my surprise, he was then with them. They were all murmuring.

“Run… Run… Run…”

I could smell a foul odor. A rotten meat? No! Corpses! They were with my friends.

…Six, Ten, Twelve…

They’re approaching. Nearer… and nearer.

“We’re all dead! What are you doing here? I sacrificed all of them for my mother who killed herself for the safety of her friends. How stupid she was! She killed herself just to save her friends from the raging fire of my father’s anger. This house had been the start of all and now I brought you here to prove to my mother that friends can be sacrifice for your own good! That she committed a mistake when she chose her friends over her life!”

Keito was then in front of me. His eyes were full of hate and hurt. He raised his hand and ready to kill.

“NOOOOO!” I pushed him hard. Thick blood coated my arms and the next thing happened so quick. I didn’t know if I had pushed him that far since all the lights that made everything visible turned black.

***

As I opened my eyes, everything was in white. I could see faces. And as I slightly rubbed my eyes, I saw my mom, my dad and my sisters. Daiki’s, Ryutaro’s, Hikaru’s, Chinen’s and Yuto’s parents were also present. I was in the hospital.

“What happened?” we all asked each other in unison.

“The police found you lying on the ground outside an abodoned house in Osaka. What were you doing there? What happened? Where are your friends? You didn’t tell us you were going there.” My mom asked.

“Ryosuke-kun, please tell us where is Yuri?” begged Chinen’s mom.

Tears began to fall and is tarted to cry as I told them what had really happened. They said that Keito and all of us were all missing for almost a month since we left. They couldn’t even find that Keito. And according to the Registrar’s Office of the university where Keito was enrolled as a fine arts student, there was no Okamoto Keito studying there.

How things came very strange for me. I’ve lost all my friends without a clear reason how and why?

And Keito? Who was he? My friend? Yes, he was. A ghost? I don’t know.

Really…
