You will need an HM called ‘Fly’ to teach your Pokemon how to do that. Unless you have one that can learn fly normally… I’m not sure if there are any Pokemon that can do that. I just started trying to track these HMs down myself.

If it's a special skill I do not think it would be easily obtained. Fly is in Cianwood, so I guess I'll head there as soon as possible. There are other HMs? What abilities do they teach?

Fly is in Cianwood? [A smile. ] Thank you. You are the first person I have spoken to that has been able to tell me where to find that.

I know there is an HM Flash since I just won that during a battle in Sprout Tower. That is in Violet City. I have also heard there is an HM Surf that teaches Pokemon to swim across bodies of water with a trainer on its back. And HM Cut for cutting down trees and things along the routes. I am sure there are more though.

You're welcome. Someone else told me you get it from the gym leader but you need a Violet City badge to use it. [Pause.] It seems too complicated, but I guess it's worth it if you don't have to walk anymore.

I see, so there's an HM that close; I'm in Violet City too. I wonder what the purpose is to these different abilities. Surf and Cut would be useful, but I don't know about Flash, what does it do?

You're gonna need the Zephyr badge, from Violet city. The actual thing to teach them you only get in Cianwood though.

It's the westernmost city on the map you probably have. Long pain in the ass journey there.

The item is an HM called Fly; you receive it for winning against the gym in Cianwood. And then you need the badge from the Violet gym to use it.

[Finally, useful information.] Thank you. I'm in Violet, so I guess that's half done. Cianwood looks hard to get to, though.

It is rather far away, yes. And I'd imagine the gym there is much more difficult than the one in Violet.

Most likely. The pokemon get stronger the further you travel, don't they? It would be easier if Fly were the first HM, but they don't cater to travelers here.

[L doesn't actually sleep, either. At least, not often and not on purpose. He's here now in the Pokemon center lobby, looking like he might almost have reached his limit for being conscious. A Froslass hovers near him with a pillow and a worried expression, but he's good, and he wants her to know that, since he keeps sort of... nudging her away when she draws too close.]

Not now, Gamine, I'm thinking...

[He spots Ys out of the corner of his eye.]

You. You work here, don't you...? I've seen you before, but only recently.

[Ys loitered in the lobby most nights, content to flip through posts on his 'gear. People gave out so much information on the network it was almost funny. He hardly needed to ask questions-- just read. No one bothered him, not even his Sneasel, curled up on a cushion to his left. It is a surprise to find a person addressing him in the middle of the night.]

Hm? [Ys looked up from his gear at the stranger; that posture looked awkward and painful. He would have back problems in the future.] I do, I've only been here a week.

[While L had been unable to stand being in the pokemon centers for two long for a short time after he'd arrived (he considered the music the most annoying in Johto), he'd become very adept at tuning it out. Now, he spent a fair amount of time here when his pokemon were too tired to train. Now, his entire team was resting except Gamine.]

Just a week? You seem to have settled well. You even have a job... most people are still in shock after just a week.

I've been in Violet a week. I like the PokeCenters, you learn a lot about the pokemon when you work with them.

[Whether the man is pushy or just curious, answering the questions doesn't bother Ys. He's careful to keep his tone light and somewhat childlike.]

I'm Ys, I started in New Bark Town. What's your name?

[ Oh, look! It's Madoka! In person! Looking taller than you and having a really baby face. She's walking into the PokeCenter, holding a plastic bag. It seems like she just got back from doing some shopping around.

She seems to recognize Ys, but it's the first time she has seen him in person. ]

[It's a slow day at the Pokecenter when he hears that name spoken by a familiar voice. His eyes widen a fraction -- he hasn't seen anyone he's spoken with on the network in person until now-- before he smiles. It's a friendly expression.]

Hello, Madoka.

[The encounter is unexpected, but not unwelcome. She looks about as young as this body is.]

[ Last time she remembers speaking to him was when he was in Cherrygrove. She hadn't known he left and arrived in Violet already. She walks up to him and puts on a smile. ]

It's nice to finally meet you in person, Ys-kun. Umm... did you just start working here?
