I'd call them back and threaten to change insurance companies if you're rate isn't reduced back to the original amount. What you claimed wasn't even an accident... WTF?
My own insurance company told me last week my rate may go up because of the accident I was in during May, even though the whole thing was totally NOT my fault. Apparently it doesn't matter who caused it anymore. =_=
$96.93 a MONTH?!! Holy crap, that's highway robbery! Call Progressive. I've been with them awhile, and it's cheap. $400 some odd for 6 months. And I have GREAT coverage ($250,000 or some such each accident). And that's WITH a rental car, should I ever need one!
I wish I had proper advice for you, but sadly, I'm not well-versed in such things.
I do remember at the end of high school, I was passed on a back road, and the guy started to spin out in front of me. My choices were thus: I could either collide with him, or try to avoid him. I went with option b, which saw me spin out as well and wind up in a ditch adjacent to him, rather than option a, which in theory could have possibly injured or killed him, perhaps not doing myself or my passenger any favors, either.
Evidently, according to the insurance company, option A would have been the correct one if I didn't want any hikes in my plan.
Had I thought about it at the time, I should probably have protested more heavily, given that I think it should be illegal for such a policy to be in place that, in essence, encourages auto owners to kill other people, rather than avoid such things.
Raising you for towing costs because of a belt snapping sounds like a complete gyp, though.
I hate to say it but yeah, they can raise your rate for any claim you make on the policy. Most car insurance companies do that. I think All State is the only car insurance company that claims to not do that but I don't know how much faith you can put in them. You may not have much luck fighting the hike as they did pay you but if you are really ticked off you can call them and let them know you are switching to another company because of this action. Just be polite. But remember once an insurance company has your money they'll do everything in their power to make sure you don't get it back.
I been looking at Unitrin Direct and State Farm, they are asking about $70-$75, though I did see Progressive's recent commerical about you can say the price you wanna pay and they can create a account to balance your budget, which I though was nice.
I'll give Safe Auto a call back and see if they will adjust what happen and tell them about them that i'm looking to leave them unless they can drop it to that rate. We will see how it goes.
Thanks guys, means a lot that you responded so quick to this!
