not to take anything away from people who are losing or lost their jobs.... but in a recession i didnt think you'd see restaurants packed and malls filled to the gills.

I can't really speak for the customers in restaurants...but I know that people who have been shopping in my mall recently have just been "browsing" or helping themselves to the merchandise. Plus, people tend to spend money that they don't have...just to keep the front of normalcy.

It's the same here, I work in retail. There's the same amount of customers, but they aren't parting with their cash. There's the odd person that might walk in a drop a bit, and there are people who shop but shop for the cheapest item they can find (for the sake of shopping I guess) but the majority of people are just browsing with no intention to buy. And yes, probably a lot of shoplifters too.

I heard a few friends with family say that they're eating out a little more at the moment because it's relatively cheaper than buying groceries with food prices being so high.

But I get what you mean, the aliens probably don't realise there's anything wrong, watching us through their super long lenses.
