My past experience with mankind does not give me a lot of hope. We need something like in the movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still", where the majority of mankind is forced to save itself.
This was scary to me 20 years ago. Too few people are interested, and too many make a profit from it. Hardwood, soya, palm oil, cattle. Someone brings these products to our neighbourhood and advertises them. And those people won't stop, even when their children are choking in the dust. Perhaps as a species, we deserve this, but the other species don't.
I remember in science, looking at the classic graph of rabbit and fox populations. Like a sine wave - first one peaks, then the other. And locusts, that have a population explosion (plague) when the conditions are perfect...until the food runs out. We are the plague and scourge of the earth. We're animals, we can't help ourselves. And we're just intelligent enough to justify it, and just aggressive enough to maintain it, but too dumb to work together to stop it. I'm glad I won't live to see the other side of the sine wave peak.

My bets are on a natural super-virus, or some cowboys' genetically engineered nasty something or other that gets loose.
HeY Jerry, that gives me an idea for a film, but I want to at least be in the credits. No, hell with the credits. Cash, good barter, etc.
