HEY THERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT HOMESTUCK

Oct 03, 2011 16:38

Hey there! This is a big Homestuck info masterpost for my fellow players at United One so that hopefully it'll help you all understand Jade's character better, along with any other Homestucks in the community! Fellow Homestickers, feel free to reference this post wherever!

If you have any questions about the Homestuckverse, feel free to ask those here as well!

The most important part of this is the troll culture section, which you can easily ctrl+f to; it'll help you understand your characters' interactions with any of the twelve trolls much better!

I'm going to include a copypasta straight from the MSPA Wiki about the plot of Homestuck:

As described on the MSPA WEBSITE, Homestuck is "a tale about A BOY AND HIS FRIENDS and a game they play together." On his 13th birthday, JOHN EGBERT receives the latest computer game, an immersive simulation game called SBURB BETA. Working with his friend ROSE LALONDE, they discover that the game allows the players to manipulate their reality.

A startling revelation comes, though - an apocalyptic METEOR shower is beginning to destroy the world before their very eyes. However, the game gives them tools to escape their fate. John, Rose, and their friends DAVE STRIDER and JADE HARLEY work together to flee the apocalypse and enter a new dimension called the INCIPISPHERE. The Incipisphere is a world of "warring royalty in a timeless expanse," where the forces of PROSPIT and DERSE struggle for dominion over the realm of SKAIA in the chess-patterned BATTLEFIELD at its center. The kids are given primary guides - spirits known as KERNELSPRITES - to help them understand this new setting and the rules of the game. The four of them must fight against the monsters of the dark kingdom, controlled by the DENIZENS, and free the CONSORTS of the four planets circling Skaia. They must master the inventory system called the SYLLADEX, and understand the ALCHEMY SYSTEM the game provides.

John, Rose, Dave, and Jade slowly learn of their roles as the Heir of Breath, the Seer of Light, the Knight of Time, and the Witch of Space respectively. They must all undertake personal journeys and come to terms with their relationships with their GUARDIANS. They learn they must pass the SEVEN GATES, reach Skaia, and stop the BLACK KING and BLACK QUEEN from destroying Skaia in an event called THE RECKONING. However, it’s said that Skaia would buy the kids time by creating defense portals that would redirect the meteors to another place in paradox space - Earth. Some of these meteors are to "seed" laboratories like the SKYSHIP BASE on Earth, and carry EXILES - former members of the two kingdoms - to the year 2422, long after the apocalypse, for them to repopulate the Earth. Others spawn anomalies like the FROG TEMPLE, and others become the meteors that hit the kids’ houses in the first place. However, another revelation happens as John eventually reaches a laboratory in the Incipisphere’s outer meteor belt called THE VEIL, where he uncovers a mysterious ectobiology machine. John accidentally facilitates the kids’ and their guardians’ own existences. They are sent back to the past on meteors during the Reckoning as well, to set in motion the entire chain of events.

However, things begin to go wrong, as a weapon Jade tries to give to John accidentally ends up in the hands of JACK NOIR, the nefarious archagent of Derse. He commits double regicide against the monarchs of Derse and becomes the Sovereign Slayer, wreaking destruction wherever he goes - something never intended to happen in the game.

Meanwhile, time wears on and the kids learn to wake their DREAM SELVES. However, on their quest to grow up and fill into their hero roles, they also stumble upon signs that their mission will end in disastrous failure if they continue on their path. They also learn that they are not the only group of people playing the game. Countless other sessions of players, on other planets in other dimensions, also exist. They begin to be contacted by the twelve TROLLS - players from ANOTHER PLANET and another dimension, who played a session of Sburb (or, as they called it, Sgrub) long ago in the past. Many aspects of their session were similar, with their own twelve-planet Incipisphere, their own EXILES and more. These twelve managed to win their game, and discovered the ultimate purpose of Sburb - to create new universes. In fact, the kids’ home universe was created by none other than the trolls.

However, something went wrong, and an indestructible, omnipotent demon was unleashed into their game, which is said to have dire consequences for both the kids and the trolls. Before the trolls could gain access to the new universe, they were stopped by a RIFT in the space-time continuum called the Scratch. It was later revealed that this demon was actually Jack Noir who under unknown circumstances got into the session of the trolls and prevented them from winning the game. The trolls soon got in touch with the kids, and now they are begrudgingly attempting to help the kids in learning of things like the FIRST GUARDIANS of Earth and Alternia, and the GREEN SUN. It is said they will work together to create the Scratch in the future to escape their fate, but what happens beyond the Scratch is anyone’s guess.

Yeah, no one else really gets it, either.

Troll Culture
The trolls are a species living on the planet Alternia. They are humanoid, have sharp teeth, gray skin, black hair (Eridan has a streak of purple in his but it's safe to assume that he dyed it because he is vain as all hell) and candy corn-like horns in various shapes.

Trolls usually don't care about fashion and the typical garb is a black shirt with their symbol on it (for the Homestuck trolls, it's a zodiac sign), black pants and shoes. Seadwelling trolls are excluded and have much fancier dress. There are, as always, a few notable but mostly minor exceptions-Kanaya is very fashionable, Nepeta has her trenchcoat and partial fursuit, Vriska has red shoes, Gamzee's pants are spotted, etc.

Trolls mate in some sort of bucket system, and the buckets are made into one large "incestuous slurry" in a Mother Grub. She gives birth to a bunch of grubs and eventually these grubs turn into trolls.

From birth, trolls are faced with many challenges to prove their worthiness. Weaker trolls are "culled", killed and removed so that only the strong survive. Murder is not a crime in Alternia-in fact, murderers are often commended-and trolls are generally viewed as a violent species with a moral code very different from our own. As such, you can expect trolls here in United One to be violent (not always, though, as the twelve featured in Homestuck are pretty atypical of Alternian society norms) and pretty defensive!

Trolls' blood comes in a rainbow of colors. The lowest that is supposed to exist is maroon, and the highest tyrian purple. Karkat is an exception and has human red blood, but this is a mutation and grounds for culling. Colors seen in the twelve Homestuck trolls are:

Karkat - Bright red (like a human's, mutant, not supposed to exist)
Aradia - Maroon (lowest that's supposed to exist)
Tavros - Brown
Sollux - Yellow
Nepeta - Green (green blood is described as "okay but not great")
Kanaya - Jade (another abnormality but only as a rarity; in fact, Kanaya's blood color warrants that her lusus be a virgin mother grub, which is something special)
Terezi - Teal
Vriska  - Cerulean
Equius - Blue
Gamzee - Indigo (the highest blood color a land troll can have)
Eridan - Violet (starting here and higher, trolls are seadwellers. Seadwellers have fins on their faces and generally live underwater, and are the highest caste of trolls)
Feferi - Tyrian purple (yet another abnormality, but in a good way-Feferi's blood color is the highest ever known and thus she is next in line to be the empress of the troll race)

Trolls higher on the hemospectrum tend to be more violent, and those lower are less so, with a few notable exceptions.

Blood color usually reigns supreme but there are actually a surprisingly few number of trolls among the Homestuck twelve who actually care. This being said, it's safe to assume that everyone else on Alternia cares.

Trolls have no parents. Instead they have a lusus (plural lusi), an animal with the same blood color as them that raises them. Their gender is also the same. Nepeta's is a cat, Equius's is a centaur, Feferi's is a sea monster that speaks with Horrorterrors, Vriska's is a giant spider, etc. Interestingly enough, Gamzee's lusus is a sea goat and lives in the ocean, despite Gamzee being a land troll and the highest blood color one can be.

Troll Romance

Unlike our human romance, troll romance is based mostly on the emotions hate and pity and oh you know what there is a whole thing on troll romance right here I'm not rewriting all of that let me just give you a tl;dr.

Matespiritship is the closest thing trolls have to human romance, based largely on pity. It's represented by <3 and is part of redrom, romance based on positive emotions.

Moirallegiance is like platonic soulmates, represented by <>. Moirails balance out each other, most often a calm troll pacifying a dangerous troll, like in the case of Nepeta and Equius, who are the picture purrfect moirallegiance. A moiralegiance is a give-take relationship and if one party is not giving (see Eridan and Feferi) then the whole thing is failed.

Auspisticism is blackrom, romance based on negative emotions, and described as "a hand holding hands". An auspistice mediates between two rivals to keep them from becoming kismeses when such a relationship could be dangerous, or just to keep them from killing each other. It is represented by c3<

A kismessitude is based on a combination of sexual attraction and hate. Like matespiritship, a kismessitude is one of the quadrants that fills buckets for reproduction. It's represented by <3<

Rather than "in love", each quadrant has a different term. You are flushed for your matespirit, you are pale for your moirail, you are ashen for your auspistice and you are caliginous for your kismesis.

Wow! That was a lot! If you still have questions you'd like to ask to better understand the characters and their situations, ask them right here and I'll do my best to answer! Thanks for reading, everyone!
