I've been living on a steady diet of Quasi, Stephen Malkmus, Rocky Votolato, The Dresden Dolls, and, umm... Ringo Starr.

I tend to listen to composer types rather than bands, but they have bands (orchestras...same thing) behind them.

It's too bad you're not a rocker, cause Minibosses are great video game music cover band (power trio doing Metroid? YES!)

You should also find tracks by the Black Mages, a rock band that plays Final Fantasy music, and it's legit, since one of its members be the composer of Final Fantasy music Uematsu Nobuo (no, there is no rock rendition of the Chocobo Theme :p)
