I didn't know of him before he died (he's obviously very bay-area local or US-focused) but interesting what you said about the virus.

So many people assume when you say your partner has a long-term illness that it's HIV/AIDS related; ironically that should change as we see a generation of people dying from non-AIDS conditions who have survived like my partner...it's an annoying assumption though. The people I've known who've died have died from car crashes and brain tumours, not AIDS. In part due to people like this and their work preventing the disease, I think.
