Well... Bush says he's aleady spoken with Gates several times. Considering Gates has already been named (the day after the election) and decisions like this aren't made by drawing straws... my guess is that this has been in the works for a while.
It sounds like they may have timed the switch over to serve as a response of sorts to the public's "voice" via the midterm election. But one wonders, if the administration had not so ardently supported Rumsfeld or even bounched him during the campaign process, would the GOP have lost so many seats?
Either way, I find that this election I was, strangely, more concerned with the outcome of local politics -- and suffice it to say, am beyond disappointed with the voters in my community. *sigh*
I was thinking the same thing. I feel that they really bungled this election, from the top on down. It was pretty much a bad night across the board, with the exception of 3 or 4 races. It will be interesting to see how people react to it, if they learn from their mistakes or try and write it off as a nationwide trend with voters. I don't think it was so much the other side winning, as us not giving people a reason to vote Republican.
