"Why do you always have to make things so damn difficult?I wish I could answer that question. I really do. I don't know what compells me to take the hard road when it's OBVIOUS that there are easy roads all around me that would surely make my life easier. No, not me. I have to keep on trudging down the road that no one in their sane mind would take ( Read more... )

I never seemed to have the problem with French that I'm having with Finnish. ;)

Then again, it could just be that my brain wants Swedish rather than Finnish because of its closer likeness to my own native language. Who knows?

At least I'm not trying to learn Polish. That looks like such an awful language to try and learn ... :D

But gosh Swedish would be so easy for me to pick up! :(

polish would be easier than finnish, it's still an indo-european language, even if the othography looks awkward. an the pronunciation is very predictable, once you've learnt to read it's quite straight forward, for example sz stands for the english sh, cz for ch, etc.

of course swedish would be a piece of cake for you to learn. after all we share quite a few words, without any previous knowladge of swedish you easily recognise words som man, hand, finger. with some help (or not) also hund, katt, bok.

but hey, you an sami can both learn swedish, it's not awfully useless in helsingfors!

i mean -ki ;)

Gosh, english is so easy. Are there really people who think it's hard?

And yes, Finnish must be one of the most devious languages in the world. The words have a tendency to get ridiculously long. Even I find it easier to say some things in english...

Yes, I had an hour long arguement with a native English speaker on how English is NOT the hardest language in the world.

He believes it's hard because of all the slang. I say that slang is not that difficult to conquer, because for the most part, written English is IDENTICAL to spoken English (unless you're talking to some black man from the ghetto, but then he's just speaking ebonics). My experience with Finnish has taught me that WRITTEN Finnish is no where NEAR similar to the spoken Finnish. It's all screwy. :)

It's not to much vowel pitch ... it's how you say the word ...

Like muta you say quicky, but for mutta it's mut'ta ... Like you have to say both t's. So it's not JUST spelling, hehehe.

Though it's probably not as bad as Chinese. ;)

What in Gods name..?
Do people actually -say- that in Finnish?

I have to hand it to you, Row.. you've got some guts to tackle that.

They try to shorten some of the words (numbers), but it doesn't do much good.

yksi - yks - one
kaksi - kaks - two
viisi - viis - five
kuusi - kuus - six

Usually they are only successful in eliminating one syllable, so what's the point? ;)
