Poor Dave! Cat abcesses are a nasty business. Apparently their skin heals much faster than the underlying tissue so they're very prone to them after play-fighting with other cats.

My old cat had an abcess once on her spine - came up from nothing at all to something the size of half a hen's egg in a matter of a couple of hours. I took her straight in and they told me if I'd left it overnight she'd probably have died of septicemia. I'm now extremely proactive about abcesses (except interdigital ones which always manifest as a sprained foot and are usually very small, so it can take a day to figure out they're there).

Dave had her own body weight in anti-biotics last week and I thought we'd got on top of it, but no, hen's egg on her back returned overnight.

I had a cat in the Old Country who had the same operation, shaved patch, tubes hanging out for a few days. He liked to sit in our front window and have Attention from passers by; we had to put up a sign saying "World's first bionic cat, no animal has been harmed in the testing of this product" so as to not frighten the neighbour childrens too much.

Yes, my cat was in the same state, poor thing. I think she hated the collar more than the abcess or drains.
