I agree about it being a numbing agent, definitely.
An escape from "our" personal lives, as well as the madness that surrounds us (especially for those who feel helpless). What bothers me more than the idol like status with which celebrities are treated, is the willingness to bring in the vultures and hounds when a celebrity shows how human they really are.
Of course, many celebrities do not help themselves by throwing their money around and acting above all, or buying their way out of their troubles, but in the end we and they are all "just" people.
