when i got mine, AGES ago, like in 1999 or something, there wasn't the code thing. you could create new journals like there was no tomorrow.

Hmm. that's weird. I got mine in 2002 and you needed the code thingy. Maybe it was something they tried and then got rid of because it made no sense.
