Kindle 2

You know, I'd get one.  I honestly would - it looks cool, and I think the world is moving out of the era of having physical collections of things that could be digital (iPod for music, Apple TV for movies/shows, and now the Kindle).  And I read so fast that I have to take an entire backpack of books on vacation to not run out (more annoying than ( Read more... )

Hmm, this doesn't notify people when you tag them, does it?
No, but one can use Google Alerts for that kind of thing. Though I'd be coming to the party a day or two late if I relied on that instead of my own eyes in this case.

Anywho, I don't know anything about the Kindle 2, but I do know that you owe it to yourself to read this, because it is awesome.

Good article, but.. harmonictempest February 26 2009, 01:24:59 UTC
I did in fact owe it to myself, and it's a well-written bit. I think it'll just be a wait and see - I'd be likely to use the iPhone as a reader if they geared it for that, for instance, and I identify with the guy when he says the Kindle's too big and not backlit.

The only thing I'm not sure about, which I'd just have to test and see, is screen size. It's difficult to read while scrolling, and I may read fast enough that I'd need to be scrolling almost constantly.

I suppose time will tell. Thanks for the link!

Honestly, I don't read enough books over an expected Kindle lifetime to make up the purchase price. If I were going to buy a new electronic gewgaw, it would be a tiny netbook.

I'm ambivalent about the Kindle (and ebook readers in general). I played around with one over the summer and was singularly unimpressed with the grayishness. There's just something a lot more comforting about a real book, even if it is old-fashioned. Plus I'd be scared of losing my entire library, which is way more devastating than losing my music collection.

People who can't back up their data are doomed to relive their past (purchases)?

As I understand it, purchases are automatically backed up, so you can re-download without paying. I was thinking more along the lines of losing the device itself -- a Kindle's more likely to be stolen than a real book.

I see! This feature of iTunes isn't highly publicized. In fact, eMusic's "download a file as many times as you want or need as long you're a member and we have the rights to sell you the song" policy was one of the things that attracted me to them.
