I've been doing a lot of cooking/baking lately.
What I made:
Egg Cups! What I did differently: I pretty much follow the recipe... I usually cook the bacon a bit longer so that it won't be quite as harsh on my wife's lack of a gall-bladder.
What I liked: Toast! Bacon! Cheese! What's not to like?
What I would do differently next time: Not a thing. I've made this one a few times, and it's made of delicious win.
Would I make it again: BACON! So yes.
What I made:
Garlic Sausage and PotatoesWhat I did differently: I skip the butter, use whatever potatoes I have on hand (which are rarely, if ever, Yukon Gold -- pfff expensive), and get cheapie
Sans Nom Polish sausage (though, when we've got a bit of spare cash, this will ROCK with
Mundare sausage...)
What I liked: It's extremely simple to make, and doesn't take a whole lot of prep work.
What I would do differently next time: I tend to cook the potatoes an extra five minutes, because I have this thing where I absolutely loathe undercooking potatoes.
Would I make it again: Absolutely!
What I made:
Peanut Butter OATMEALZ BarsWhat I did differently: I'm pretty sure the dish I used was not 8 x 8 (I do not think we OWN an 8 x 8), and I melted the chocolate & peanut butter in a pan on the stove (I am old and do not trust the microwave, so there). But other than that, mostly the same.
What I liked: Chocolate, peanut butter, oatmeal. The answer is obvious.
What I would do differently next time: Probably nothing. I've made them twice, and they rock.
Would I make it again: SO MUCH NOM.
What I made:
Cookie Dough WINSWhat I did differently: I didn't bother to dip them in chocolate -- they were fine as balls of dough. And my chocolate chips were regular-sized. Man-sized!
What I liked: No raw egg in the dough means they don't need baking! (And I don't recommend baking them -- it doesn't really work, ahaha.)
What I would do differently next time: Not forget about them in the fridge. >.<
Would I make it again: Definitely!
What I made:
Peanut Butter Bread PuddingWhat I did differently: I used regular sliced bread rather than French or Italian.
What I liked: Peanut butter makes for an interesting bread pudding flavour...
What I would do differently next time: NOT use regular sliced bread. It really didn't set properly with the less crusty bread. (I was attempting to use up left-over bread crusts.)
Would I make it again: Eh. Possibly.
What I made:
No-Flour Peanut Butter CookiesWhat I did differently: Not a thing.
What I liked: They had a much stronger peanut butter flavour than cookies with flour generally do.
What I would do differently next time: Nothing! They win!
Would I make it again: Yep! This is my new favourite peanut butter cookie recipe.
What I made:
Pumpkin Pie Snickerdoodle BarsWhat I did differently: I couldn't be arsed with the white chocolate drizzle -- they were plenty sweet enough without. And I made my own pumpkin pie spice. (I have all of those spices in my cupboard ANYWAY, so why spend extra money just so that it's pre-mixed for me? Pfff.)
What I liked: OM NOM PUMPKIN.
What I would do differently next time: I think I'd stick with what I did. It worked out well.
Would I make it again: I would! But only if I knew I'd be able to give some away. They're really quite rich, and we in no way finished them on our own.
What I made:
Whipping Cream Pound Cake! What I did differently: I used the blogger's amounts of sugar and eggs, rather than the original recipe. And I originally halved the recipe, which made for exactly one loaf.
What I liked: Pound. Cake. OM. NOM.
What I would do differently next time: Not a thing!
Would I make it again: Yes. Always. I'm warring with myself not to have one of these in the freezer at all times, srsly.
What I made:
Black Magic CakeWhat I did differently: I only used 1 2/3 cups sugar, because: a) I prefer things to be somewhat less sweet, and b) that is all the sugar we had in the house at the time (grocery shopping was to occur later in the day). And I used it for a sort of pseudo-black forest cake, with a can of cherry pie filling and an improvised vanilla buttercreme frosting. (Improvised because buttercreme is ALWAYS too sweet, and damn near impossible to spread thinly on a not-particularly-dense cake when one has forgotten the trick of freezing the cake first.)
What I liked: The cake tastes awesome -- the coffee really does bring out the chocolate. And all the flavours worked quite well together.
What I would do differently next time: Get less angry at the frosting. And remember to freeze the cake in order to spread said frosting less messily.
Would I make it again: I would!
What I made:
Egg Custard TartsWhat I did differently: There was a certain amount of eyeballing of ingredient amounts involved, being as I am not good with metric measurements. (I could invest in a kitchen scale... But really, I haven't had many problems with eyeballing.) I also cooked them for considerably longer than the recipe called for -- more like 35 - 40 minutes than the recommended 12 - 15. I'm not sure why mine took so much longer to set... Possibly I had more custard in the tarts, or thicker pastry. Either way, I'd recommend turning the pan halfway through baking, to make sure the tarts bake evenly. (I forgot to do this, and had the problem of the ones at the back being done while the ones at the front were still wobbly.)
What I liked: Egg custard is AWESOME. And the sweeter pastry works perfectly for them.
What I would do differently next time: I think I'd try to get the pastry a little thinner, and hopefully remember to rotate my pan. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.
Would I make it again: I certainly would!
What I made:
Pizza CrustWhat I did differently: Okay, to be honest, all I took from this was the recipe for the pizza crust. I haven't tried the roasted garlic and pesto part. But I used it to make stuffed-crust pizza, mwahaha! (If you want to make stuffed-crust pizza, make the full amount of dough, but use more than half for the stuffed-crust, because you'll need to have enough extra dough to roll in the cheese around the edges. The first time I made it, I neglected to do that, and it made for a kinda small pizza. >.<) I also threw some spices into the dough (I think thyme and garlic powder) because it tasted a wee bit bland by itself. Oregano or its ilk would probably be good, but alas, I am allergic. :(
What I liked: It makes for a super-NOMMY pizza crust!
What I would do differently next time: Not use the store-bought grated cheese with cheddar in. Blech, cheddar on pizza. :P And I'll probably experiment with the spices, BECAUSE I CAN.
Would I make it again: Absolutely!
What I made:
Garlic Pepper ChickenWhat I did differently: I used chicken breasts instead of wings. Still worked, though!
What I liked: OM NOM GARLIC.
What I would do differently next time: I think I would try it with wings as well -- I suspect it will be even more awesome.
Would I make it again: Hell yeah!
What I made:
Crockpot Chicken VindalooWhat I did differently: I did potatoes instead of green beans in the curry, because I dislike green beans, but LOVE curried potatoes. And I kinda attempted to combine the naan recipe with another naan recipe I had tried previously, but neglected to put in anything that would make it not have the consistency of a biscuit (egg in one recipe, yogurt in another). So we had naan biscuits!
What I liked: The house smelled like vindaloo all day! Haha, this is a good thing in my world...
What I would do differently next time: Not try to freeze it, for one. It did NOT freeze well. Also, NO MOAR NAAN BISKITS.
Would I make it again: Probably not. My search for DIY vindaloo continues...
What I made:
Peppery Chicken CurryWhat I did differently: I pretty much stuck to the recipe, but used lemon juice instead of fresh lemon.
What I liked: It wasn't crazy spicy, but it definitely had a nice flavour.
What I would do differently next time: I don't know... Probably nothing?
Would I make it again: I might. I'd be more likely to make this one than the crockpot vindaloo.
What I made:
Kung Pao ChickenWhat I did differently: I used regular rice vinegar. I don't think it made much of a difference. o.O
What I liked: Perfect amount of kick, and delicious flavour.
What I would do differently next time: Hahaha, make more so there would be leftovers!
Would I make it again: Oh yeah. No question.
learan suspects that I may be attempting to fatten her up to eat her... But! This is to-be-continued, as I have only gotten about halfway through the recipes I've tried in the last month and a half, but have entirely run out of motivation to continue the post. More later!
