harp on film?

Just thinking about this earlier when some friends and I were discussing the perfect casting of Jeeves & Wooster (UK TV series featuring a double act of well known comedians in the PG Wodehouse stories) and I may have mentioned it before here, but thoughts please ( Read more... )

oh i thought the same thing! When I saw Teller, I thought he was the spitting image of Harpo, plus he does magic, doesnt talk, and has lots of stage experience (i guess it's the closest to vaudeville as you can get these days). I bet if he tried he could be an insane clown like Harp was. Tis true that Robin Williams has that loveable, endearing quality about him, but i can't see him doing a role where he doesn't jabber in order to get laughs, plus he looks nothing like Harp.

Teller is *the* perfect lead.

Having spoken to Teller (after a show) I could see him doing a very good job with Harpo's NYC accent as well

Oh yes, that's something I forgot! That I heard he talks right!

He has a very soft New England accent, but I could see him coming up with the right accent with a little coaching. His voice us quite similar to Harpo's though. A little smoother.

I don't think there are many people in showbiz I detest moreso than Robin Williams. I can't imagine someone who never shuts up playing Harpo.

Exactly. "What's the use talking?"

It would sadden me if Robin Williams played Harpo.

If they decided to pick a well-known, sort of loud and obnoxious actor to play him, the least they could do is pick Martin Short.

Oooh, I can see it, maybe. More of an actor than a "playing myself" type.

I can see him doing the pantomime bits, he can do them. My only fear would that he would add too many of his own movements to the character, making us feel like we're watching Martin Short and not Harp. Plus his voice would be a problem for the offstage scenes..

I'm just saying he's better than Robin Williams :)

Americans know Jeeves & Wooster! They show it on PBS here.

Teller would be perfect.

Yeah. Well, not this month because they're doing pledge drives but the PBS that shows things Red Dwarf and The Office usually does at 7pm.

Maybe not there, though! I guess I just assumed a lot of them around the country showed the same type of stuff.

I thought they got rid of all that stuff months ago.. I used to watch Red Dwarf, and I caught Jeeves & Wooster only twice. I thought it was some temporary thing. Is that 7pm eastern? I'd love to see them again.
