have you ever read alain de botton's ON LOVE?? It's one of my most favorite books...if you're a theory/philosophy nerd and a romantic mixed into one, i think you'll really enjoy this read. he also wrote a book about traveling - equally as nerdy romantic - which might be more appropriate for you since you're abroad...

right now, i'm obsessed with abe opincar's "fried butter", it's really short, like read-in-a-day short, but phenomenal.
try james morrow's "towing jehovah", which is cool.
nigel slater's "toast" was awesome, too.
i also read "the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime" last week, and it was good.

poisonwood bible/ b. kingsolver [interestingly written solid]
temple of my familiar/ alice walker [rachel's favorite; i've read an amazing 10p thus far]
