have you ever read alain de botton's ON LOVE?? It's one of my most favorite books...if you're a theory/philosophy nerd and a romantic mixed into one, i think you'll really enjoy this read. he also wrote a book about traveling - equally as nerdy romantic - which might be more appropriate for you since you're abroad...
right now, i'm obsessed with abe opincar's "fried butter", it's really short, like read-in-a-day short, but phenomenal. try james morrow's "towing jehovah", which is cool. nigel slater's "toast" was awesome, too. i also read "the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime" last week, and it was good.
i don't know what you've read & what you haven't, but
god of small things/ arundhati roy [amazing beautiful great] poisonwood bible/ b. kingsolver [interestingly written solid] temple of my familiar/ alice walker [rachel's favorite; i've read an amazing 10p thus far]
