I do have some traditional Japanese music (ethnomusicological stuff) that I play for my kids, but I also tell them that it's along the same vein as "I've been working on the railroad" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb" for American kids... and then I play the one that's a rock song about Nagasaki.
Go you, Harold. You are an awesome teacher for noticing this... (by the way, this also touches very deeply on one of my hugest pet peeves about music education - that it's not relevant/authentic/"real word" enough... I can elaborate if you want.)
I'm not a public school educator, but I have to say: ACK! I don't know whether that situation offends me more as a musician, as an educator (of some description), or as an American. Just... wow.
