Hold on a minute. The new Batman movie was filmed in Chicago? Bullshit! Gotham is NOT Chicago.

This is so disappointing.

Really? I think Chicago makes a great Gotham City, especially with its history of organized crime. What city (in North America) do you think it should have been filmed in?

Gotham has been a nickname of NYC for like 200 years.

Honestly it never even occurred to me to draw parallels between Gotham and NYC. I've always thought of Gotham as being heavily influenced by Metropolis. Also, Batman Begins was filmed in Chicago, at least partially.

agreed. Batman Begins was definitely Chicago.

Well, while NYC is all gleaming and lovely these days, Chicago still has a bit of the ol' grit to it, so perhaps that's the reason.

Maybe it's only gleaming and lovely now because Batman has been doing a good job. If he moves to Chicago you're up a creek.

detroit, now _that's_ where gotham really is these days. big buildings, empty streets, and steam coming out of pipes nshit.

the real travesty is that battlestar galactica is filmed in vancouver instead of on a spaceship.

I wouldn't care except that it amuses me to see New Yorkers all riled up.

You all are probably right about your city being wonderful, but you have to remember how ridiculous you sound to the rest of the country, particularly residents of other urban areas.

One of these days I'll make a batman spoof where "Gotham" is some west-coast suburban sprawl area. I'm imagining the dark knight in heavy black full-body armor and cape walking down a sun-drenched subdivision in La Jolla. His enemies are kids in shorts who skateboard where they're not supposed to and write graffiti on highway overpasses. Occasionally he fights against illegal immigration, violently throwing middle-aged Mexican farm workers over the border fence. I'm almost imagining something like Brick but cornier, more absurd, and with Batman as a character.

Also, fuck, I'll be in San Diego when you have your west coast b-day party.

P.S. When criticizing New Yorkers' attitudes about their own city, I did not mean to imply anything remotely redeeming about San Diego. The only good characteristics of this city are the beach, the weather, the UC campus with an extremely large engineering department and the the fact that its a 2 hour drive from L.A. (home of a female friend I am very fond of). S.D. is several giant leaps behind Pittsburgh in terms of being a culturally interesting or significant city.

Personally I prefer to think of myself, not as living in the city of San Diego, but as living in the really bland part of the Santa Barbara-to-Tijuana megalopolis (I'm sure you can imagine equivalent places in Jersey).
