After a rather unpleasant last-minute surprise, I'm heading off into the eastern basin of the Kelaran nature reserve on my own. I've decided to hike the 10 km to the plateau instead of having the transporter deposit me right there. It's late afternoon here, not yet dusk although the shadows are growing longer. It's so still and peaceful, no sounds

talceles and a bunch of the 'younger' crowd are heading to the tropics. Lying around on a beach just doesn't appeal to me

Who told you we're going to ly on the beach?!

I'll tell you what our plan is: first hike a little way up the mountain, then canoe down the river, all the way to where it meets the sea and spend the night camping on the beach. (Maybe that qualifies as 'lying around on the beach'?)

Why didn't you join us? Being part of senior staff doesn't mean you're a 'senior person'...

Thanks, Tal, but I was already in the transporter room with all my stuff when I got the news, and well, I guess I just wasn't thinking. I didn't know the specifics of your trip, but yeah, it does sound nice. (A lot more inviting than hanging out with chakotay and kathrynjaneway, to be honest). Maybe if I'd known earlier, I would've joined you, but I'm already here now. And it's nice. It's night now in this part of the planet and the sky is filled with so many stars--
