Thoughts from my trip...

So I flew from Texas to Georgia on Saturday.  I won't bore you with travel details (besides the point that I spent the weekend in Texas, and didn't see anyone in a cowboy hat until the Dallas airport.  And she was getting on a plane to Atlanta.), but I did notice something that struck me as sad.  In theory, at the airport, life was buzzing around ( Read more... )

It's such an important observation.

I think the thing it takes to get past it is noticing it.

I don't mean to deflate your point, but I feel compelled to make the opposite argument. I know more people online and have reached out to them (and vice versa) on a personal level in ways that I never could have done otherwise. At pretty much all times, I feel connected to a veritable cloud of near-strangers by molecule-thin lifelines. Not to sound like a telcom commercial, but "de-humanising, anti-social" technology makes this possible. I can prove this to you by pointing out that I'm posting on your LJ, and we've never met.And your experiences in airports may be different, but mine and the experiences of others I have heard are that airports are vistas of crushing boredom and irritation. There's nothing to "experience" in an airport aside from strip-searches by the Patriot Act-enabled security guards and duty-free prices. I've never struck up a conversation with a stranger in an airport or even sitting next to me on a plane, and the times when I could have done so, iPods and the like weren't involved ( ... )
