I've been trying to play with shapes lately, and as previously stated, more clay. I've gotten bored with making the same shapes over and over, so I've been trying to work on certain concepts, and see what the clay does when I try to make that certain shape. For example, trying to work on height, roundness, or a certain paring or set.

However, I've been lucky, and have created a TON of new things lately, and I've gotten behind on posting. So, this will be a bit lengthy... But, it's fun for me to see what progress I've made. I hope you also enjoy.

I was trying to get a certain shape, and it just wasn't happening, so then I started to play. With this one, I decided to see what would happen if I messed with it after it was off the wheel. It actually looks fairly awful in this picture, but I like it enough to keep it... We shall see if it makes it all the way to the glazing phase. =)

I think because I've been trying to play with straight edges so much, I decided to try to make something ROUND! This is what I ended up with. I'm fairly happy with it, but I won't really know how I feel until I can trim it. Something about this shape is just not working for me yet...

This is a shape that I became fairly obsessed with in college. I think I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it again. When I worked on that project was when I was most comfortable and confident in my skill level, so it felt cathartic to "get back" to that level. (Whatever that means! =P) If you want to know what this idea is inspired by, read about a guy named George Ohr. He is awesome, hilarious, old (and dead...) and has(d) a dash of crazy. Always a good combo, especially in an artist!

I have a new project that I'm working on that will require a lot of height, and a LOT of clay. So, I'm going to be trying to work my way up! This turned out kinda pretty for an experiment though!

This was my 3rd attempt tonight (notice there is no second attempt to post!) and although it got a bit off, a fellow potter suggested keeping it and making it into a sake bottle. This will mean I will also have to make sake cups, which will be a whole other adventure... But for now, I'm happy with this.

Another project I have wanted to do for a LONG time was to make a pitcher and basin (in tribute to Terry). You already saw the pitcher, but now I'll need a bowl big enough to pair with it. So, this was the first try. This bowl is actually a bit "wonky" (uncentered, and therefore not even), but I kept it for now anyway because... Well, I liked it. And it was a ton of clay. And probably the first time I've used that much. (almost 5 lbs!) But again, we shall see if it survives.

My second attempt went better, but I'm not sure if it's big enough or not. However, I'm kinda ridiculously proud of this one. And yet, when I got my "Vigland Piece" back today (which I used to be really proud of and impressed that I had actually made...) I was not so impressed anymore. It's not that it's bad... It's just that my skill level is so different now. It's subtle, and it's hard to explain but for me, it's fun to see the progression.

Now that it's done, I'm not super happy with it. I like the inspiration, but I'm not sure that it's what I'll send to Vigland. It's ok, but it's just not... Vigland material. =)

Well, have you had enough for a bit? I know I have... (not throwing, but posting!)
