Dream !! 11

Tiny hands take a square of paper, coloured a deep and bright pink, and begin to fold. Fold, fold, fold. Crumple. Another piece of paper. Fold, fold, fold. Crumple. Fold, fold. Crumple.

Tiny hands take the three pieces of ruined paper, crumple them together, and throw them away.

A bell rings. Two dozen children rush out of the room, grabbing this and that as they make their way to the door and home.

“You can't do origami?” asks a man sitting at a dinner table, his supper in front of him.

“I was never good at it either,” amends a woman, sitting beside him. His wife. Her mother.

Tiny hands fiddle with chopsticks, poking at the rice until they earn a disapproving glance.

The hands get bigger, but they still can't fold the piece of paper.

A red haired girl sits in a club room, brightly coloured pieces of paper on the table in front of her. She folds a crane and a turtle. She displays them for a moment, thanking whoever compliments her.

One hand clenches into a fist, eyes turning to look outside as the red haired girl continues to fold.

“That's really impressive, Asahina-san!” exclaims a boy, his normal of look of disinterest gone as he examines the shapes she's made.

A glance over reveals an origami elephant. An elephant! Who can make such things?!

The sky turns dark and the hands gather brightly coloured papers, putting them on a bed. Sitting there, they fold and fold. Dozens and dozens of pieces are discarded, thrown to the ground in lumps. Hours must pass, light gently gathering at the outside of the window.

Finally, a clumsy looking crane is made. Satisfied, the hands, now red and full of tiny cuts, place it on a bedside table.

“It's time for school!” the woman tells the lump under the blankets.

“I'm not going!” Haruhi's voice emerges from the lump, tired and grumpy. When, after a lengthy discussion, the woman leaves, Haruhi's voice can be heard again. “Elephants!” she mutters to herself, sounding incredulous. “Who can make such things?”
