Appearance: Haruhi is the Host Club’s ‘Natural’ host. Days before school actually started, it was told that Haruhi got gum stuck in her hair and the solution was to cut it short like a boy. She found that taking gum out of her long brown hair was frustrating. Initially, she long, straight brown hair and later on after her haircut, she has short, messy hair. She also loses her contact lens before school started, so she is spotted with large, dorky glasses. The school uniform is too expensive and thus, Haruhi usually attends school in her “commoner’s” outfit, like an old sweater and simple pants. Haruhi’s usual outfit to school is quite similar to a boy and from there; the Hosts mistook her as a boy ever since the Hosts met Haruhi. However, Tamaki realises her potential to become a Host and forces her to undergo a makeover. Now, she’s spotted with Ouran Academy’s uniform and also contact lenses, looking smart and polished. Haruhi has large brown eyes and is around 155cm (5'1") tall. Haruhi’s chest is also a bit flat, about A cup, thus enhancing her look as a guy. When outside, Haruhi usually wears baggy clothes and do not wear tight-fitting clothes. The baggier and more boyish it is, the more likely she would wear it. However, there are times where Haruhi would wear girly clothings- usually only when she’s forced to.
Personality: Haruhi is very intelligent and has excellent insight into the feelings of others, except when they have to do with her-- she tends to be clueless as to the growing feelings of nearly all of the hosts around her, similar to Tamaki. She is very sensitive and straight-forward as well, however sometimes; she would come across as being blunt. Furthermore, her straightforwardness can lead her to some tactless comments which might upset others. Due to her father being a drag queen which explains his peculiar gender awareness, Haruhi does not mind being mistaken as a boy or being called a girl- which was why she did not bother correcting the Hosts after they have mistaken her for a guy instead. She is also anything but stereotypical. She doesn’t bother applying make-up, fashionable clothes, or involving herself with gossips. Basically, she doesn’t do what teenage girls like herself should be doing- with the exception of household chores. Haruhi is also studious and practical, usually spotted studying, as she has to study hard in order for her to maintain with her scholarship. She is also unexposed to other areas of life and has her mind only on her studies. Nevertheless, after joining the Host club, her studying time decreased dramatically which did not affect her studies at all as she managed to cram her studying to the weekends, where there are no Host club activities. Haruhi is also very strong and independent and does not rely on others or her friends whenever she’s in trouble due to her mother’s death when she was extremely young and from then on, she took over the role of the ‘mother’ in the family. She is also often bemused and sometimes annoyed by the antics of the Host club, but in time, she gets used to it. Despite that, Haruhi also developed strong bonds of friendship with the Hosts. She can also be counted as dense as she never really thought about herself being in a romantic relationship and usually tactlessly rejects confessions from the guys in her previous school, or even those from Ouran Academy. She is also empathetic and is able to tell Hikaru and Kaoru apart, one feat which no one else was able to accomplish. Haruhi is not easily frightened by things like bugs, ghost stories or dark places. Her only fear is of thunder and lightning, also known as astraphobia. She has been afraid of thunder and lightning every since she was little. She likes seafood, especially ootoro. In her way of dealing with people, Haruhi is known as very nice and simple, which contributed largely to her popularity in the Host club.
History:
Story’s background
In the story, the main lead, Haruhi Fujioka is a special student who has been admitted into Ouran Academy due to her good results and she was thus on a special scholarship which was later told to be funded by the Suoh. The story started with Haruhi, who had been mistaken as a boy by the Host Club, breaking this expensive vase which was supposed to be for a school auction, which was worth up to eight million yen. Haruhi was then forced to be the Host Club’s ‘dog’ until she graduates to pay off her debt. Then, the Host Club realised Haruhi’s potential of becoming a Host as well, and transformed her into a Host and further changed the debt to have a thousand people designate Haruhi due a minor conflict. Soon, all the members of the Host Club knew that Haruhi was actually a girl, and swore to keep that secret, for as long as they could. During the club’s dance party, Haruhi was tricked by Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin to kiss one of Haruhi’s clients on the cheeks. Doing so, Kyouya cut off her debt by one third. However, due to Tamaki’s clumsiness, Haruhi instead kissed the girl on her lips. Then, Haruhi’s identity was almost found out due to the school’s mandatory Health inspection. However, thanks to Ootori’s family who was in charge of the Health inspection then, Haruhi’s secret was still kept unknown. Next, Houshakuji Renge showed up with an obsession with the vice-president of the Host Club, Ootori Kyouya, and afterwards realising that she had mistaken him for another person, she stayed in Ouran Academy as the Host Club’s manager. Later in the manga, the story proceeds on more about the Hosts’ feelings for Haruhi and the storyline took a turn as both Hikaru and Kaoru turned out to like Haruhi. However, Kaoru gave her up due to his love for his brother overpowering his crush on Haruhi. Then, Tamaki also realised that the feelings he felt for Haruhi were not as simple as Haruhi’s ‘father’, but he had yet to put a name for that feeling. Every other Host club member realised about Tamaki’s love for Haruhi- everyone except for the both involved. Haruhi was also unclear of her own feelings and up till chapter 57, where she finally realises her true feelings for Tamaki.
Haruhi’s History
Haruhi was born to a lawyer mother and a drag queen father. Her mother, whom she loved and idolized, died when Haruhi was young, leaving her to be raised by her father. From then on, Haruhi took the role of the ‘mother’ in the family and does stuff like going to the market and cooking for the small family. Her father claims to be bisexual but refuses to be with any woman but Haruhi's mother, and is therefore gay, although we never see him with any other men. At some point in the story, Haruhi decided that she wanted to be a lawyer like her mother. In order to do this she wanted to go to a top school, but her father can't afford it. As such, she works very hard in school and earns herself a scholarship to Ouran Academy.

Example tag: Haruhi looked at her own reflection in the mirror after her haircut. Her long, straight brown hair was gone and it was replaced by this short, messy-looking hairstyle. Not that she minded much, but it made her look like a guy. She patted the hair down and tried to style it in a way which would make it tamer. Doesn’t work.. She took a last look at herself before rushing down to meet her father. They were both supposed to be at Ouran Academy for the application procedure there and for other administration matters which require her parent to be present. Dressed in a simple baggy pair of jeans and an old purple sweater, Haruhi pushed her large glasses further up her nose and sighed. Being accepted into Ouran Academy meant the world to her, and it would also greatly help out with her father’s burden with the household. There were times like this when she wished her mother was still with her, and where her mother would guide her along and show her the way. But now, she was on her own and she had to succeed. Otherwise, it would mean pulling her father down even more. Haruhi took her first step into her new school and looked around. The campus was astounding. It didn’t even looked close to her previous school. The students mingling around were dressed in such high fashion that even she was awed. Snapping out of her thoughts, she heard someone calling her. “Haruhi~! Aren’t you coming along?” She looked up and noticed her father waving his arms out to her.
“Yes, Dad. I’m going right over!” Haruhi called back and she took one last look at the grand school before sprinting up to her father and into her new life in Ouran Academy.
