I've always been again the death penalty. Against it no matter the situation. Even leaving out my moral/political stance against the concept of any state getting to decide who lives and dies, the fact remains that ( Read more... )

Amen.

*has been avoiding ONTD_P's coverage of this story, as generally the comments on death penalty-related posts there make him want to kill himself*

your logic is absolutely sound when it comes to why the death penalty as a system is a bad idea. I think as a sociologist who has been trained to also see the structural inequalities that exist in all our major institutions, it becomes far more troublesome than the mere fact that human beings are prone to error. Fucking flawless rant right here. <3 Tbh, as much as I don't think that a human life can ever be placed in the hands of the state, the much more fundamentally glaring and common-sense aspect of being against the death penalty is what you describe here, that no matter how careful you are to generally kill "the right people," ANY SYSTEM WHATSOEVER WILL FUCK UP and when that system concerns the taking of human lives then you cannot afford fuckups. Period. It is safer to never implement it than to implement it and devote needless resources to making it "work." Basically the death penalty is a pragmatist's nightmare, and would remain so even if the cost of a state-murder amounted to no more than summary beheading right after the guilty verdict.

All I can say is "here, here." I agree with you 100% and I simply can't understand how anyone can take the other side of this argument. I can't fathom a justifiable reason to support the death penalty.

Also the captcha words I'm having to type in to submit this comment are "ticular asolus" which makes me giggle.
