The 'Golden Peacock' was the name of the establishment, and Yumichika went well with the theme, wearing a dark purple kimono and golden brocade obi. Long golden feathers had been embroidered into the silk with golden and silver threads, shining every time Yumichika would turn around. His hair was up in an intricate style with delicate kanzashi matching the colors and theme of the kimono. A very subtle make up was dusted on his cheeks, lips and eyelids, giving him a rather enhanced natural appearance.
The sound of his voice remained with Ikkaku even after a week. At that moment, Ikkaku had not been able to go up to him and strike up a conversation, Yumichika had just looked....so radiant, compared to himself and his tattered clothes and old bandaged wounds.
And still, he could not get Yumichika out of his head. There was something about him something that pulled Ikkaku towards Yumichika.
"Tch! He's a whore you know." Kazura said one day he found him moping around.
"I know he's a whore, what do you want me to do about it?"
Kazure blew smoke from his pipe to Ikkaku's face. "Work that to your advantage. He's a whore."
As much as a fighting genius he was, Ikkaku could be a bit slow sometimes. Only a week later he came to the realization of what Kazura had said after receiving his earnings for the night.
He waited until the night had lighted up the distinctive lanterns of the street to head out. He didn't bother buying any new clothes instead of his regular clothes, even though it was starting to look like a pelt he'd just thrown over from all the stitches and patches that pulled it together. He had money and that was what counted.
He approached the Golden Peacock and noticed that Yumichika wasn't outside, flaunting his goods to attract the customers. It was good then, maybe Yumichika was taking customers.
Ikkaku went over to the counter, a small lady was sitting behind it but he could tell she was the type that was hard as nails and firm as steel, probably the owner. He stepped up and cleared his throat to make himself known, distracting the lady counting the money with a tiny scale.
She looked up and looked over at him up and down with her beady eyes, already thinking of prejudice against people like Ikkaku, poor or just looking for a one-night stand. The kind that never had enough to pay for the good, and if they had, they didn't want to leave.
"Can I help you?"
"I'd like a room."
"Do you have a reservation?" The woman asked with a sigh, the answer was obvious but it was the routine.
"No. But I'd like to request someone."
"No can do. Without a reservation you can't request, you take what we give or you can go somewhere else."
A heavy leather bag of money was dropped in front of her. She looked at it curiously before peering up at Ikkaku.
"I have money." That resolved a lot of problems. The woman, opened the bag with her bony fingers to look at the coins inside; they looked legit, but she still took one and weighted it with one of her regular coins. It really was legit.
"And who might you be interested in?" She asked as she took out a couple of coins and began counting them to herself. This mas was certainly not a noble or an official, but he had money, a lot, and that could vouch for him.
"Huh?"
"Yeah, his name. You said you wanted to make a request."
"Oh..." Shit, shit, shit! Despite appearences, Ikkaku was very nervous. This wasn't his first time in a whore house, but it was his first time requesting a particular person, and in such a fancy place too. With all the nerves, Ikkaku had already forgotten the name of the guy he was longing to see.
"Aiya....Ayasegawa..."
"Oh, him. He's pretty popular, but he's free right now." The old lady turned around and picked a thin wooden plate from the wall, an elegant kanji carved into it.
"Pick any room you like, place this outside. He'll find you."
Ikkaku was a bit surprised at the system, but he supposed it was efficient to them. He walked through the hallways to find and empty room, preferably away from all the ones were moans and creaking beds could be heard. Finding one, he placed the plate outside, next to the door and went inside.
It wasn't a very lavish room, it served its purpose, but at the same time it looked very elegant in it's simplicity. A season scroll was hanging on the wall, sophisticated strokes going along a misty morning in the mountains. A futon bed in the middle of the room and on the corner, a small table with sake on it. Sake! Oh, oasis in the desert! It had to be courtesy sake, right?
The sound of the paper door sliding open surprised Ikkaku and he turned around see who was coming in. The kimono was just as lavish as the last time he'd saw him. The kanzashi on his hair looked even more expensive and the make up looked the same. But this wasn't Yumichika.
"Who are you?"
"Huh? Didn't you request for Ayasegawa?"
"Yeah, but you aren't...."
"But I am. I'm Ayasegawa Chikasae."
Chikasae. Two people with the same last name, what were the odds. The other Ayasegawa stepped into the room anyway, closing the door behind himself. Walking over to the sake, he produced two cups and filled them generously, offering one to his client.
"Might as well, don't you think?" And Ikkaku wasn't the type to refuse a drink.
"I suppose you were looking to see my son then?" Chikasae asked once Ikkaku took the drink and got comfortable.
"Your son?"
"Yeah, he's Ayasegawa Yumichika." Yumichika! That had been the name.
"You're his father?" Ikkaku questioned.
"Yes. He's on break now, but if you want I can call him here."
Ikkaku nodded and he sipped the sake. Chikasae was very approachable and friendly, and very beautiful. Now that he thought on it, why had he come? He'd wanted to see Yumichika, but why?
In the short time it took to call Yumichika and have him come, Ikkaku and Chikasae talked and discovered that they partly enjoyed each other's conversation. Chikasae was humorous and smart, while Ikkaku was easy-going and clever. A gentle knocking on the door alerted both that Yumichika had arrived.
"Oh, come in son."
The paper door slid again and Ikkaku had a hard time catching his breath. Chikasae was certainly beautiful, but Yumichika was stunning, more so dressed just in the silver-lined nagajuban, his hair down and away from the kanzashi. The make up washed from his face. Yumichika looked youthful and fresh as opposed to decorated when he had all the paraphernalia that came with dressing up.
Comparing them together now, father and son looked uncannily similar; but Ikkaku could see a little difference in how their jaw was shaped. Chikasae had harder angles were Yumichika had smooth lines. He could also see the experience and matureness that came with age in Chikasae's eyes and face; it was a glimpse of what Yumichika would look like someday far away.
"Dad, who is this?"
"You don't know him? I thought you two knew each other..."
"N-no, you see, I saw him at the ring were I fight--"
"Oh, if you're looking for a fuck I don't do quickies."
"It's not that--"
"You'll need an appointment if you want to see me again."
"You won't come to the ring anymore?"
"No, I got what I wanted from there."
"But--"
"No buts! Why are you here anyway if it's not to fuck!"
Chikasae remained silent as he watched the exchange, lighting and blowing on his kiseru pipe calmly. "Well....these are some odd circumstances...."
Ikkaku was quiet. Yumichika had hit the nail in the head, why had he come? He couldn't just say that he'd felt like looking for him or that he felt a special pull towards him, that would be pretty stupid and would be rebuffed immediately. Maybe even kicked out and banned from the Golden Peacock. Quick, Ikkaku, think!!
"I-I want to buy you."
"....excuse me?"
"I want to buy you. I'll pay for your company."
Yumichika just stared before bursting into laughter, like he'd just heard a good joke for the very first time.
"Are you saying you want to be my danna?"
"Yes." Ikkaku affirmed, secure in his promise and words. Yumichika was even a bit impressed, never had he met a man like this, all the rest were sniveling dogs that only wanted to mark their territory deep in his body. A module for pleasure, nothing more, nothing less. Yet this man, this....Ikkaku, pulled on his heartstrings harder than any other person he'd seen, met or known for longer.
"Uh....y-you'll have to speak to Madam...."
Ikkaku nodded and broke into a grin, he still had to realize what had happened, but he felt like he'd hit the jackpot already.
To be continued...Oh, Pretty Woman
Author's Note: I love Franki Vallie~ I wanted to put more lyrics, but I think those lines are enough to express what I wanted. This is a rather long chapter, I hope it's good because the next chapter is not written out, so it might take a while, but I do promise it'll be done for next week Friday.
