I'm not sure what your friend means by teaching her daughters about novels. Is she just trying to encourage them to read more? If so, she could set up incentives for them or enroll them in Pizza Hut's BookIt program, which has been around forever and is made of Teh Awesome.
If she's trying to get them to think and discuss about what they read... what we did was Mom would read the book, either to us or on her own, we'd read it (if she didn't read it to us), then we'd discuss it. Say the book dealt with one friend betraying another, then we'd discuss betrayal, why people might do it, what led that person to betray the friend, and so on.
