For a long time Arthur stood by and watched while Eames fell into a cloud of despair, shooting up and popping pills, drowning herself in whatever was available. She was a good thief, though, and the best forger, and Arthur couldn't afford to lose that. But when things became so bad they couldn't get any worse, when it began to effect their work, Arthur took Eames in, pulled her from the darkness and made a point of getting her clean. Arthur became Eames' drug of choice after that and it's been the same ever since. It shouldn't work, not really, Arthur giving and Eames taking. But it does.
