Toni evolved. Don't know how. Never let me near him with the stone before. Must've gotten at it when I was out.

I did. Just didn't accept the stone for the longest time. Gave up. But now he's gotten at it himself.

My Snorunt did exactly that not long ago. She thought I was in danger and evolved to better protect me.

I think it means that your pokemon has attained a level of confidence and maturity he didn't possess before.
