That said, I bet I'd feel similarly about your book, even though I grew up very comfortable. My parents owned a home and my mother took me shopping for new clothes every school year and we had a pool in the backyard. They bought me a car, even though they made me learn how to work on it first. My folks were pretty well to do, back in the day, way more well to do than I am today. They were wealthier than I will probably ever be - does anybody get rich in "human services?"
But I also think that in many ways, my life is richer. I don't actually mind buying my clothing at Value Village. I don't mind buying everything in bulk and using the shit out of my freezer. I can keep my kid clothed and my family warm and fed (albeit barely) and I feel proud of that.
And you should, too.
