Away from road noise

A couple of weeks ago I went backpacking at Point Reyes National Seashore. This wasn't the first time I'd been to Pt. Being cold is the worst! I have a Laminiar Torch sleeping bag and that does me fine... don't believe the ratings on the labels. Some of those are labeled, like, "you won't die of exposure down to this temp", not "you will be comfortable enough to sleep at this temp". So something a good ten or twenty degrees under what you expect the low temp you'll actually need to be is probably about right. (Maybe ten for you, since you tend to run hot?)

Oof, those are pricey. And a good pound heavier. Granted heavier may be unavoidable - the 2-lb sleeping bag seems to be the result of it being underinsulated AND too small. But the Torch is, I think, overkill for me - I don't currently plan on going backpacking in subzero conditions (part of me says "Wimp!" but the other part of me says "Fuck it, this is for fun.") and it would likely be uncomfortably warm for regular use. Which is a non-trivial issue I'm seeing - there aren't very many backpacking bags meant for moderate conditions, it seems.
