Poor Asami

Introducing the latest victim of the Avatar fandom's massive Die For Our Ship against anyone who remotely threatens their OTP, Asami Sato.


What we know about Asami so far:

1. She's gorgeous.
2. She's the rich daughter of Hiroshi Sato, inventor of the Satomobile.
3. She's a non-bender.
4. She's sponsoring the Fire Ferrets.  (Pro-bending sports team consisting of main characters Mako, Bolin, and Korra the Avatar.)
5. She makes Mako go blushy.  And goes on a date with him.

Based on just that, the Korra fandom has already:

1. Called her a wide assortment of lovely sexist slurs.  ("Bitch", "slut", and "tramp" seem to be the favorites.)
2. Decided she must somehow be part of the Equalists.  (Hey, just like they assumed Jin must secretly be a spy for the Dai Li!)
3. Declared that there's no way Mako could possibly actually like Asami and he must be just using her for her money.  (Hey, just like they decided Mai was nothing more than a gold digger!  By the way, not a very flattering opinion of Mako's character.)
4. And slammed her for sinking Makorra.  (Even though we've known forever that there was going to be a love triangle in Korra and there's a Makorra kiss in the TV spots we haven't seen yet in an episode.)

All we need is for them to call her a Mary Sue (like they did for Suki and Song) and we'll pretty much have a straight repeat performance of ATLA's reactions to "interfering" characters.  You'd think they'd maybe have learned something from that and responded to Asami's presence in a more mature, calm, and rational way.

Nope!  It's the same old song and dance we had last time.  She "gets in the way" of my ship, so she must die!

I just boarded the Makorra ship and now I'm already thinking of leaving.  I have no doubt Asami's going to be a wonderful addition to the cast and I'm just sad and disappointed that after four years, this fandom still can't react to potential "threats" to their ship with anything other than frothing hate and loud childish tantrums.

Ugh.
