The character of Joffrey is undoubtedly the most despised character in TV history, he is no doubt someone tailored to our hatred, he's a spoilt and very, very evil little brat that would kill anything or anyone standing in his way.  However, while his actor is praised for making us hate what he does and hope he gets a fast comeuppance, to a large ( Read more... )

I think that people rarely make the distinction between "person" and "character". It's true that he's an interesting character, but that doesn't change the fact he's a despicable person who inspires hatred, and I doubt people think in depth about whether they (don't) like him as a character or as a person. I mean yes, sometimes the saying "love to hate" pops up, which I think sums up pretty well the feeling that characters like that, brilliantly written to be hated by the audience, inspire, but the distinction is still only rarely stated, and I think in most cases it's considered a given...

I was thinking about this seeing fan reactions to Joffrey's death. It suddenly hit me there wasn't anyone reacting the way some people would have reacted if Draco died, let alone if he had died so horribly. Usually villains are seen as sexy by at least some of the fan base, so this intrigues me. I think it is truly remarkable that the character feels so real, and yet is so completely despicable. Usually we see villains that are either cardboard cutout caricatures of evil or else humanized to the point of villain decay.
