Hobbit Sue police, start your engines!

Okay, I get it: Peter Jackson is folding, spindling, and mutilating your precious little childhood. Whatever.

But can't we at least wait to watch the freaking movie before vilifying Tauriel as Mary Sue, Destroyer of Stories and Scarlet Harlot of Babylon?

movies, strong women, original characters, lord of the rings, misogyny, female = mary sue

Haha! I thought she seemed a fun character. I mean, they added individualized orc characters in the last movies and no one seemed too offended by that. And they added a wizard with a sleighful of bunnies in the new one and that was awesome. I suspect they'll pull off adding an elf girl just as well.

I can see why they would add her. The Hobbit has a severe dearth of the feminine. But I've always liked to pretend that Thorin, Fili, Kili, and Bombur are actually women dwarves. And since supposedly no one can tell the difference between male and female dwarves unless you strip them naked (the women have beards, etc.), this totally works. Also Bombur is pregnant. Seriously, the book and the film are both way better if you go in assuming this.

An experienced dogsled musher and LOTR fan has actually examined the feasibility of bunny-sledding, at great pedantic geekish length and with helpful illustrations.

Now that the movie is in the theaters, making your thoughts timely: consider yourself Metaquoted.
