I have been really into the paranormal since I was very young but never got into it much. My family is Catholic and really frowned upon thinking about it or researching into the unknown. I completely understand where you're coming from because I thought the same exact thing and I too come from a very religious Christian home. I think if you're researching via reading or watching shows, you're fine. If you start holding seances, EVP sessions, or playing with a Ouija board then yes you're probably going to get a response. I've done both and I'm OK. ;)

There is a current theory amongst para people that if you're thinking about this stuff/watching these shows that "it" knows and will thus respond but I don't necessarily believe that. I think in most cases you've freaked yourself out and misinterpret mundane occurrences.

Research as much as you feel comfortable. That's the best rule of thumb.

I once looked f in to french cooking and was haunted by wolfgang puck for a week! It was awful but the crepes were good.

ok all kidding aside simply researching a topic should not really draw them to you but any rites or even quija board use could open a gate way to something you do not want in your home. You should be safe enough just reading.
